In the back to back seasons and so far this season the only out of conference games UConn has lost are at #5 Kansas without Steph Castle and Cam playing on two bad feet/legs and at home to now #1 Arizona this season with Tarris and Braylon out. We had a chance to win both games at the end. Most of the other non-conference games we dominated.

It's astonishing how great UConn is over these three seasons when they have proper reffing and the games aren't turned into rockfights.

As much as the conference frustrates me with their brand of reffing where all clutching, grabbing, and even tackling is allowed I think it toughens us up in a way where the team can play through anything. It's again why I'm so high on their chances once it's NCAA tournament time.

It must be an awesome feeling once the conference season is over and all of a sudden they're playing games where they can run their complicated sets and come off multiple screens without being held or if they are it's rewarded with two ft's.

Dan has mentioned a number of times that he looks for to the freedom of movement in Tournament games that play to our motion offense sets. Are you with me SJ?

I think many are living in the past with the aggressiveness of the Big East. Yes, Seton Hall, St. John’s, Providence and to some extent Georgetown play aggressively but the other half of the league Xavier, Butler, Creighton and so on don’t play defense aggressively or in some cases at all. Creighton has had the least amount of fouls called on them a few years running. I would say the Big 10 is as aggressive, maybe the referees call it much better there, but all of the Big East games are not rock fights. It’s good for UConn to play all sorts of styles and playing in some rock fights is better preparation for the tournament. You can’t argue with the current success in the tournament so why question what has been working.

We always out tough teams in the tourney. So I think the Big East is a plus. Florida won the game last year but they didn’t beat us due to toughness. They beat us cause they had better players.

Great post. I also think it speaks to our style of offense. If you haven't seen it in person, its very hard to scout and prepare for. Especially in a 48 hour window.

I look at it this way. In the two games UConn has played that were close in the BE so far this year UConn got to experience two very different play styles. An open shoot out and a grind it out win (PC - 35 OER, SHU -9 DER). Both games may help UConn in the tournaments first few rounds.

Seeing a variety of play styles and hard nosed teams helped that 2023* team a lot, and any time you can have your team game planned by coaches like McDermott/Pitino/Holloway/etc you will learn your flaws quickly (adjusting and fixing those flaws may take longer).

Note: 2024 was just a wagon once it got healthy and moving, those loses were more due to injury (KU/SHU) and crazy hot shooting (Creighton).

It’s not about the teams. It’s about the way it’s reffed. Have you seen a game in another league where they permitted the kind of holding that was going on all game vs SH?
