Unless you're self-employed I trust you have a better agreement with your employer when you have an illness or injury and take off work.
Apples and Oranges comparison...CT is an At Will State where all non-union employees may be terminated at any time just as they can leave their employer at any time. The employee and employer agree to a benefits package within the scope of employment and the employer presumably has insurance for WC claims, STD, LTD and D&D. If the employee acts in such a manner that it affects their productivity (late to work, unreasonable sick day claims), the employer is well within their rights to release the employee.
Thought about along these lines, the 1 year renewable scholarship seems like a pretty good deal for the student athlete.
If continual injuries prevent a student athlete from competing and fulfilling their obligation under the scholarship agreement, the school should not be liable to the student athlete.
