UConn Metrics (1/5)

“Wins Above Bubble” which, to me, is a way more important metric than a lot of others because it can’t be manipulated by adding or subtracting 8-10 garbage time points.

We just get into serious slogs on offense. There is a lack of off script offense and ability that leads to a lot of bad shots at end of clock. It’s especially apparent with Malachi running the show.
He must be having problems absorbing it. I saw one sequence where everyone was just standing still and he was dribbling away looking at them like he was expecting something to happen. ??????

Maybe I'm too much of a homer. We're shooting almost 50% from the field, 79PPG despite our slow pace of play. 3pt% is decent despite the slow start for Mullins and Solo (and will keep improving). Our paint % is phenomenal. TOs are okay.

Really the only issue here is that we foul too much, and don't get to the line enough. That's something we can improve as the season goes on compared to something like press break, ball handling, or post game.

A percentage or two better from 3 and fixing our fouls by 20% on either end would give us a top-10 offense. Totally doable.
I do not think that makes you a homer. Last year we talked about potential while we were losing a bunch of games, comparatively speaking. This year we are talking about "potential" while winning games. Big difference is the defense we are playing. That is a huge point of distinction between this year's team and last year's team. I am enjoying the fact that there are other teams stealing the spotlight nationally, for the moment. This gives our boys the chance to continue to play together as we heal up and get everyone back up to speed.

I'm not concerned about the offense. Seeing out defense finally back where it needs to be after last year is refreshing. Much easier to get the shooting % up a few notches than to learn to defend as a unit.
Dauster said it well - reduce the turnovers 3-4, Solo picks up his 3 pt shooting to his standard, and that right there is 5-6 points. Small things. Once our PG tandem fine tunes a bit more. What I'm not getting from them right now is the kind of floor leadership you want in that position, that because they're likely still working on understanding where everyone is supposed to be.

We are definitely lingering in the shadows a bit this year. Danny has been quiet, the team is clinically moving through the schedule. There isn't a whole lot of fanfare around UConn nationally right now, spotlight going to the few teams ahead of us and many of these top frosh. We don't really have a lot of "star" power as of yet, as scoring is fairly distributed. There may be a little bit of UConn exhaustion as well. It's an interesting place to be, and not a bad thing. Remarkably quiet.
