UConn Men's Soccer - 2025

Thought Gbandi mismanaged this one a little bit. He made a few defensive subs when we were down a man (and up a goal) that sort of took away our ability to relieve pressure and transition to offense. Thought that was fine when we were down a man, but he basically left the tactics exactly the same after Harvard received a red as well. Harvard had been generating a lot of pressure prior to their red and that momentum continued until they ended up getting an equalizer.

We were borderline dominating the game at even strength in the first half, so I really would have liked to see him being a little proactive when it went down to 10v10 instead of waiting until they capitalized on their momentum.

So I see the team hasn't lost. I don't keep well enough anymore, are they actually good or have they just not played anybody good yet? Just wondering if I need to temper expectations or not. Used to go to every home game when I was at UConn, but much has changed.

Depends on your perspective I guess. In the United Soccer Coaches poll from 9/14, they got 6 votes, which is a positive sign. They should finish in the top half of the conference and get the opportunity to make some postseason noise, but the schedule is going to be significantly harder from here on out.

The only good win they've had was the first game away at Syracuse, but tying (at the time) #8 UMass at home and tying Harvard who was just coming off wins vs Providence and Cal aren't bad results. They'll need to prove they can stack some W's and not just be hard to play against, but seems like the best team of the Gbandi era to me at least.

This team seems extremely offensively challenged.

Temper expectations. I am a soccer novice, but by the eye test, corrections are needed.

Team seems to play hard, you don’t go undefeated through 8 matches by dumb luck. Only given up 4 goals thus far says a lot about how well Durham has played in goal and the goals we’ve scored seem way more than anything in recent years. Currently playing an incredible second half of soccer vs #10 and normal soccer power Akron on the road in the Big East opener. 3-1 late 2nd half after trailing 1-0 at the half. By far best team of Gbandi era and far cry from the end of the Reid era. Should be a tournament team and looks good enough for top 2 in the division this year.

Credit to Gbandi on this one. He set the team up to absorb pressure and be dangerous on the counter and it paid off big time in the second half. Brilliant shot on the first goal by Hanni, very very skillful play by Balthi Saunders on the second, and a first career goal for Alessio on the third. Durham’s double save was absolutely ridiculous.

Huge performance. We could have gone down 2-0 but VAR overturned the second one and we never stopped fighting. Really really good win at the perfect time heading into conference play.
