Joe Morrone refused to recruit foreign players (has to go to HS in the US). Alabama A & M had a roster full of Africans. By the late 80's into the early 1990's, Morrone's policy led to the demise of the team until Reid took over.

But for the National Title game, it made for a great back story. UConn was "America's Team", if I remember correctly. I was only 13 when they won in '81.

...and then Reid's policy led to the demise of the team because he thought his NC in 2000 secured his position as soccer savant even though the results over the next 10-12 years proved otherwise.

First outbound transfer from what I can tell:
Kwame Adu-Gyamfi: 4 starts 10 total appearances and 683 minutes played
Going to UMass.

Congratulations to the University of Vermont. Their first national championship. They beat UConn 1-0 early in the year. Reminds me of our first NCAA title in 1981. Finally on the map. Good for them.
Great game. Now we just need to get back to that level. I don't imagine that UVM or Marshall have the facilities and resources that we do. I don't follow college recruiting like I did in the past, is our recruiting down? Vermont had a kid from U of Bridgeport, right in our back yard. I guess we have to give Gbandi time, I'm just a little impatient.

It was nice to see teams like Vermont and Marshall in the championship. Teams that you don't normally see go that far. Congratulations to Vermont.

In Coach Ray's defense, his record at SCSU was remarkable and his 1st half of the UConn team tenure was very successful and then came the AAC.......................................................

Congrats Coach Rob Dow and his young men. Coach Dow was a really good player at U of Maine in late 90's. Love seeing the success of collegiate soccer programs like UVermont, UNHampshire......

Marshall did win it all 4 years ago

Blaming the AAC is a copout. He refused to adjust and the game lapped him (multiple times).

The portal has made every kid a free agent. There will be no such thing as developing players anymore.

i saw him when he was in high school. Phenomenal speed and touch for a big guy but Gbandi doesn't favor offense from what I see. Ray Reid 2.0.

Yeah, the early title, then about a decade of consistently fielding top ten teams (that seemed to always get picked off in the tournament) was a very nice run but for many of those years it seemed he preferred a style that kept lesser opponents in the game, which often led to getting picked off by lesser opponents.

It hurt recruiting big time. You need the players, foreign or domestic.
I know - I coached kids who were approached by Coach Ray and staff and they didn't want anything to do with playing an AAC schedule. Coach Deeley alluded this as fact.
I didn't say that RR was at his best at the end but the AAC sure put a damper on his recruiting efforts.
Saying he refused to adjust is the normal excuse statement in soccer by fans who never coached at a level above youth soccer. Most all of his players will say adjustments were made but the talent level was a huge factor. The OBE conference overall was but a small step behind the ACC/PAC10 in its day. The NBE is a decent conference even though PC, Gtown and Creighton had their ups and downs this past two fall seasons.
As with Coach Hurley in men's basketball, UConn would not have pulled in Coach G if they were to remain in the AAC, no matter the facilities etc.
UConn soccer will return to it's glory days.

UConn still keeping quiet in terms of any roster moves but we've had a few players transfer out. Someone mentioned Kwame Adu-Gyamfi transferring to UMass already, but we also lost Eli Conway to FAU.

Mikah Thomas signed a contract with Charlotte FC after being drafted, and Max Kerkvliet signed with Real Salt Lake. Kieran Chandler also signed a two-year MLS NEXT Pro contract. Huge congrats to all 3 of those guys.

Eli was drafted by a team that doesn’t have an MLS Next Pro team. He was leaving either way.
