Uconn in the wild

Last year we were vacationing in the Orlando Florida area. While driving our GMC Yukon with “1 UCONN” Illinois plates a car pulled along side and started honking and pointing to their UConn hat. Yesterday we parked at a Florida restaurant and a woman approached me about our plates. She said she was there having dinner with her friend that is a massage therapist for Geno.

I was at the gym years ago on the bench wearing a Huskies hat and the guy on the bench next to me asked what do you think of the team this year? This was early in Hurley's tenure and I said it's a lot better than the last couple of years with Ollie. He told me he was a walk on at UConn under Ollie.

This past October, Top of Innsbruck in Austria met a UConn fan huddled over a beer. I also saw the nicest Dunkin’ Donuts of all time there. The donuts there were fresh, elaborate, and my guess is that they used ingredients that comply with European food regulations (less poisonous).

Ok here’s one that just happened the other day!

I live and work in Cherokee, NC (pop. 2,000) at the base of the Great Smoky Mountains. I frequently wear my UConn gear to work, much to the dismay of the Duke, Carolina and Tennessee fans here.

The other day a woman comes in and says “Hey! Nice shirt, me and my brother went to UConn”

So, I of course ask her where she is from. Turns out she is not only from Connecticut, but also from my little town of North Branford (who I bet some boneyards haven’t even heard of).

Was an awesome coincidence to meet someone from my tiny hometown, 700 miles away in my tiny little new town!

.-.
Six years ago I was in Bangkok with my wife and it was our last night of the trip. We had been debating whether or not we should go out or just stay in the hotel and ultimately decided to go to this lounge bar. Well after a few drinks, I hear a “nice sweater” and turn around and see Ray Allen. I still didn’t quite fully believe that it was him until the next day when I saw him post on Instagram that he was going for a jog in the park in Bangkok.

While standing in line in the airport coming back from Aruba a couple years ago I was standing line behind a gentleman who was wearing UConn gear. My wife and I started chatting with him and his family and it turned out that his son went to high school with Clingan.

Whenever I have traveled with my UConn gear I have been stopped multiple times all across the country in airports by other UConn fans, whether it just be an impromptu UConn chant or short chat about the greatness of the program.

This was in CT. I was on 84 with my brother. A car starts beeping and then goes by and the driver is all excited. My brother asked who the heck was that? I can’t confirm because I didn’t think of it right away but it had to be a reaction to the 77-74 decal on my car, so probably a fellow Boneyarder.

Was it RichZ that had the decals made? I was sad I couldn’t transfer it to my next car.

I think you win the best post in this thread!

They look like works of art. I have good memories of Innsbruck although I broke my leg on ski trip in 86. The wildest conversation we had was with a local asking why none of us in the group of five were smoking cigarettes. Everyone smoked there back then.

This is just one of the daily UConn/CT encounters here in the real wild; South Florida - unlike diet-Florida like TX ... I wear my gang colors daily, ha

A few years ago, called the neighborhood golf cart shuttle for a ride to happy hour, to link up with a friend (from Bloomfield CT), and watch conference tourney games, and listen to some band that his friend plays in ...

This guy already in the cart asked if I was from CT ... turns out to be Sebastian in the Morning (WCCC), IYKYK, and we're all headed to the same place

This connection doesn't happen w/o the gear

Did you berate any brides? That was weekly thing for Sebastian back in his day.

Hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville, hadn't see anyone else in about half hour. Suddenly coming towards us were two women, one had a Uconn sweatshirt on. Ended up talking to them for a while. Turns out they were sisters from CT in their seventies who were on a month long road trip that had included the 2019 women's final four in Florida.

Was in Washington DC visiting colleges and took in a game at George Mason vs St. Bonaventure. Had my Uconn shirt on and ran into some others with Uconn gear.

Took some good natured ribbing from George Mason fans about George Mason beating Uconn and going to the final four.

This is quite a bit less random than these stories but I was visiting my dad's after he had some surgery during the 2014 run. We got to watch Michigan State and Florida. When I got to the airport with my UCONN sweatshirt on to head home prior to the championship I was being greeted and getting high fives from college hoop fans in general but as I boarded the plane a bunch of kids in the back of the plane with UCONN gear on starting cheering while I was walking up the aisle to get to my seat.

I scored a free pizza lunch with Sebastion from the radio station way back when. That's a nice hat but I don't think I like the t-shirt, if it is what I think it is!
