I am looking to book this for the family for 2021. A few questions for those who have been:

It looks like the games are historically on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Thanksgiving week; is that always the case?

Atlantis looks like it is its own little island off Nassau; how much of a pain in the butt would it be if we stayed elsewhere on the island, i.e., not at an Atlantis property? I would rather do an AirB&B or the like if possible, especially since Mrs. 8893 and our daughters are not so much interested in the basketball (I would plan to get two tickets for every game and bring someone different each time, depending on whoever wants to go).

Recommendations for lodging?

Airlines preferred, or ones to avoid, for flying there? I gather we should book flights to Nassau?

Does UConn offer packages that are worth considering? Do you need to have special donor status to access them?

Thanks in advance for all insights.

Atlantis is on Paradise Island, which is connected by bridge to downtown Nassau. It's not a big deal to get there from elsewhere on the Island by bus or cab, but you have to budget in enough time and cost in cabs to get there. And yes, you'd fly into Nassau.

Yes, I bumped the thread from April, when it was announced.

Haven't stayed there since it became the Atlantis so I've been of all the help I can be. But was there a few times in the 80s and the geography hasn't changed.

I've been trying to look for Atlantis hotel rates but whenever I choose the dates of the tournament their website stops working - assuming it's blacked out right now to book online? If anyone else has had luck please lmk.

I will do copious amounts of research on Nassau/Atlantis flights & lodging accommodations in exchange for being your +1 to the games;)

Use a desktop mobile site doesn't work great.

8893, did the trip last time. Meant fleudslipcon and his lovely wife , okaforprez and frank ivy (I think it was him )..and Rest In Peace Mrs Dribblesworth
Try to answer best I can:
Yes I believe that is the schedule of the days they play I think I flew in Wednesday and uconn played Michigan at ten that nite.
Last time I stayed at a comfort suites that is right off the resort but in walking distance to everything. I believe they are affiliated with the resort somehow but cheaper staying there. And u have full resort access staying there
My other time I stayed in the coral which is a resort on the Atlantis that is one of the cheaper ones and comforts suites better and cheaper I believe
Flew from Bradley into Nassau , May of had a Miami layover , think American Airlines which was fine , I have been twice they re did the Nassau airport from my first time I went abd it was a breeze to navigate compared to the last one.
Coming home last time uconn was there I was behind John belein who was at Michigan then and had a real nice convo with him. He was super nice said sterling gibbs was a huge get and don’t worry uconn would def be a tourney team that year. We just lost 2 of 3 in Atlantis in pretty classic fashion , blew a big lead vs cuse. Ollie played around with line up way too much that game. And then Daniel Hamilton almost single handidly brought us back to overcome a huge deficit vs a top ten Gonzaga team but for some reason decides to pull up for a 3 in the final seconds that he missed when he had a open lane and was living at the foul line all second half. I also rem talking to boo and he was saying how zac brown will be a huge get ..........
it’s a great atmosphere there and u get to be up close with players and coaches esp at casino at night.
I went through uconn to get tickets. I recommend that. And buy the cheapest seats at higher level. The auditorium Is super small was able to move down low pretty easy. And once teams starting losing seats became more available. Don’t think needed donor access for them. I called uconn and bought tickets abd spoke with em on phone
I think uconn even offered a thanksgiving meal with the team which I didn’t do but will def do next year when I’m back
Hopefully that helps , lmk want anymore info

My info is older, I stayed there in the late 2000's for a work reward thing. But the Atlantis has since purchased at least two adjoining properties. So it takes up quite a bit of Paradise Island (west side), but there are lots of other options. It really is a nice property, but isn't exactly budget friendly. I like the predator lagoon. The water slides are way upgraded since I was there.

I guess it depends on if you want a resort experience or a more funky Caribbean downtown thing. Parts of Nassau are going to be near those cruise terminals, with occasional throngs of people. There is evidently a ferry now from downtown to the Marina just behind the Atlantis.

Haven’t been to paradise island in a loooong time. What’s the difference between the different Atlantis properties? . Reef, cove etc. prices vary dramatically

It is all about staying in the Atlantis. There is so much to do at the Atlantis besides the basketball. We went with both my daughters, my Grandkids, and my sister and brother in law and their two boys. I bought two tickets and someone in the family went to every game, with my wife and I the UConn grads going to the UConn game. I saw most of the teams at different times during the week and have this great memory of my twin 4 year old Grandson's shaking Amida Brimah's hand. Kicking myself that I didn't have the camera as it was an iconic pic! Gonzaga and UWash were staying in our tower so we saw them everyday at breakfast! The multiple pools, water slides/parks, beach, aquarium, restaurants and finally a good size casino are all top notch. I have had several bad experiences with Airbnb lately and would not take a risk. UConn had a package but I didn't take advantage (actually didn't see any advantage). Fly into Nassau, unless you are a boater. There were some SU and Texas A&M alumns with major yachts in the Atlantis harbor.

A first round game between Syracuse and Loyola Chicago would be a terrific game. I have always believed Cuse could be a force in the Missouri Valley.

Hmm, it's possible my daughter could be attending Loyola Chicago, so I'd have even more of a reason to root against the Cuse (as if one is needed).

It has been brought up before, however due to the COV 19 it looked like it wasn’t going. There was a tournament this year. Look on the Atlantis page for THEIR requirements.

Last we played I booked a room at The Coral. Got off the elevator, took a left down hallway. Get tickets and down hallway right into the court. I don’t recall leaving the property until we left. Had great time talking with people at outside bars and just walking.Pricey? yes but nan watch your pennies.

You don’t need to sell me on it. Aside from my interest in pirate history (enhanced by Black Sails with regard to Nassau) I don’t see a reason to leave the property. It’s pretty amazing.

I’ve been both times with the Huskies. You definitely want to stay at Atlantis or Comfort Suites. This gives you access to pools and water park at Atlantis. Forget staying in Nassau. You can buy tix to follow your team so no matter when the Huskies play you could attend the game.

For those of you that are waiting for UConn to return to Maui instead of going to Atlantis, it will not be until at least 2024 as other Big East teams are already scheduled to go thru 2023. I've been to Maui 3 times and have yet to go to Atlantis, but next year might be the year.
Future Maui fields

Where did you decide to stay?
I got our own villa within less than ten minutes walking distance to Atlantis along the beach. I understand the benefits of staying on the property but that wasn’t the vibe Mrs. 8893 wanted, and this is pretty idyllic because it will be our own oasis and we can go to Atlantis anytime we want for the bars, restaurants or casino. If we want to use the water park and pools there we can buy day passes, but our place has its own oceanfront beach and looks like a pretty chill spot. Really couldn’t suit our combined purposes better.

I always get emails from Atlantis since the last time we were there. They advertise "WE ARE OPEN". Which is great. However read the policies and restrictions. Now that is now. Maybe change in November, hopefully. I always wanted to go back and play the course. Presently it sounds more than a hassle to me. Have to pay attention to timelines.

Is your villa part of resort or did you just book a house on Airbnb/ VRBO?

No it is not part of a resort. I booked a house on Airbnb. Superhost with a lot of glowing and detailed reviews.

What if the coronavirus situation doesn’t get any better? Seems like a risky purchase in this pandemic environment. Is there free cancellation?

Some quick notes on Paradise Island and Nassau.

This post is not intended to offend - this was my experience, and any BYers thinking about going and trying to save some $ will probably benefit from this.

I went to the last UConn BFA. Met a couple BYers there. That was nice.

If you are going, I recommend booking something on Paradise Island itself. The whole think is 2 miles long, and Atlantis is centered, so it's all walkable. Not sure about Ubering.

There are 3 parts to Nassua - Paradise Island, which is virtually all tourists and tourism workers, the very north strip of the main island, where the cruise ships dock, which, again, is mostly tourists and tourism workers, and then the rest of the island.

I saved a bunch of money booking what looked like a nice place at the very south of the island and renting a car.

I'll make this short - I could write a small book on our time there. Driving is dangerous - lots of speeders, different side of the road, disregard for traffic controls. Outside of the tourist areas, it is not safe. In the area in which we stayed, virtually all houses had 6-8' walls around them, dogs, which barked all night, and bars on the windows. My daughter was followed walking around the beach and had to come back to the rental. There is trash everywhere. The nearby dominos pizza had a buzzed entrance and an armed guard on duty at all times. We got 2 flat tires at the same time at one point (my fault), and we were waiting for the rental car guy, which was dicey as ____, because it wasn't clear anybody was working at Hertz after 5 pm, everybody's on island time, and so on. It was getting dark. A local couple driving an Escalade stopped and virtually insisted that we allow them to drop us off - they lived next to where we were renting. I said we'd just wait for the rental guy. They implored us, saying it was not safe. Everybody else went, I stayed with the car (my transport to the next game - was not leaving it).

The power went out. Outside of the tourist area, the locals were 50% friendly and smiling, 40% ignoring us, and 10% negative. I tried to buy some fish on the docks, at one point, and I said hello to two guys just standing there, and one aggressively said to me, "was I ------ talkin' to you?" Turned around and walked right back to the safety of the tourist area. At the time we went, there had just been a sensationalized police shooting in the U.S. (white cop, black perp), and they had just issued a warning in Bahamas to be cautious if you travelled to the U.S., so maybe that was on his mind. My daughter and I walked into a local bar. Two bartenders, two patrons. After being seated for 3 minutes at the bar and being completely ignored by both bartenders, I asked, "are you open?" Yes, yes, what you want? Very unfriendly, and clearly we weren't welcome.

If you rent a car, at least last time, there is only one parking garage on Paradise Island, and it wasn't always open and/or attended. Signage is bad.
The beaches on Paradise Island's north side are nice. The beaches on the main island are . . . meh. Okay. When we went to the beaches on Paradise Island, the corporations that owned the hotels were trying to ban all locals from the beaches. Because we weren't in one of the resorts, we had to park in a cramped lot that fenced off and walk to the beach. Last I heard the intention was to get rid of that, so that only folks in the resort could use the beach.

In short, whatever money I saved getting a place on the main island was not even close to being worth it.

If I can get a place on Paradise Island outside of the resort, I'll likely go, notwithstanding that it's a small place and you're pretty much going for the beach and the tournament. Everything else I saw was an overpriced tourist trap, which is a shame.

Every other place I've travelled I've had very good luck experiencing the culture, making acquaintances, and such.

Finally, we ordered our tickets online and through the phone and getting them at the resort before game time was . . . a massive PITA. Nothing well marked, everything disordered. Get to the front of the line, and they can't find our tickets. It all worked out, but I'm hoping that they have gotten some of the bugs worked out. QR codes on smart phones or something. [EDIT - just went to the website - what a mess, no dates, no links . . . nobody picks up the phone. LOL. Nothing has appeared to change].

Good luck, and see you there.
