UConn is the best shooting team in the country, but the Huskies’ strength is its defense, which starts 94 feet from the basket.

The Huskies:
  • Force turnovers on 29.3 percent of opposing possessions;
  • Score more points off turnovers (32.9 per game) than anyone else; and
  • Limit opponents to the lowest shooting percentage in the country (33.4 percent).
First look at the Final Four: Who has the edge? South Carolina or UConn? Texas or UCLA?

Perhaps due to Hidalgo being able to easily break a press and then have a depleted and unorganized defense that she can pick to pieces with dribble/drives.

Listening to Geno talking about Hidalgo in the post-game presser, you can hear him praise her well beyond the level of "coach politeness." He really has an enormous respect for her disruptive ability. So I agree, it's easy to imagine him calling off the press based off of that.

Because we shot poorly. Pressing mainly works when the other team has to take the ball out of the net.
Bad shooting + a guard like HH = in inability to press.

The two games were grinders(and hard to watch), which we're not accustomed to seeing. I think the rims and the ACC being a grossly underrated and underseeded conference, was why we played like we did and had had the games we played.

I hope your hangover wasn't too bad on Monday! Tough day on Sunday. I was routing for at least rooting for Kara 😎

We didn't make any shots? You can still press on makes and we didn't do that.

Well said. I’d only add that even though ND’s bench is short, they played rough-house in the paint and on the perimeter. The refs’ calls reflected this in that Prosper fouled out. Perhaps more whistles could have been blown on Cowles and de Jesus. Still, the officiating was balanced. The refs didn’t get in the way of the natural result.

But that roughhouse type of game inhibited our ability to score in the usual ways and to apply our press. I’d expect to see more of it against SC. The only way to outmaneuver it, even prevent it, is to hit our perimeter shots. That will open up the paint and force SC to take the ball out of the net. It will also allow back cuts and the dribble-stop jumpers of Azzi Ash and Kayleigh. But it all depends on the perimeter.

If we don’t shoot well, then Sarah and Azzi and Blanca will end up grappling with double teams all game long. We might still prevail, but it won’t be pretty.
