This years NCAA Women’s Basketball season has come to a close. UConn was able to advance to another Final Four but lost in the SF’s. The portal will open soon. Many coaches across the country will loose a player (s) and many coaches will add a player (s).

UConn as we know has three players graduating in Fudd, Ducharme and Williams. However, if they wanted to both Brady and Paterson can leave. I’m not saying that they will but they both are technically seniors. As of right now there is only one spot on the bench that is open to add another player to the 2026-27 team.

Coach Auriemma has added post player Olivia Vukosa. She can play down low or move outside and take 3-point shots. To me she is better suited as a PF. The other addition is guard Jovana Popovic. This young lady intrigues me. Geno seems to find hidden gems. Can this young lady be another one?

In the Recruiting Thread many players are listed as players of interest. The 2027 class is loaded with talented players. Currently at the top is PG Kaleena Smith. Next year we have Arnold and Heckel. Fisher can play the point as well. However, with a player as talented as her if she wants to play at Connecticut then that would be a big get.

Other players are #2 Ivanna Wilson Manyacka. She is a 6’2” guard or wing that can play multi positions. From all that I have read this young lady is Geno’s must must must get. Haylen Ayers is the #5 player on ESPNs Top 100 list. She is a 6’0” guard. At #6 is Jordyn Palmer a 6’1” wing. Eve Long is at #8 and is a 6’3” forward. From everything written on this board about her she is another must must get. Then there is #11 wing Lauren Hassell at 6’3”. At the top of the list in 2028 are #2 Sydney Douglas a 6’5” forward and #4 Ella Pepper a 6’4”tall wing.

Which way does Geno and staff go from here? I’m sure that the next few days, weeks and months will be pretty interesting. What are your thoughts or moves that you would like to see? Many names have already been mentioned as entering the portal. Remember no talk about UConn players transferring out unless that is announced.

Does UConn have room for an assistant development coach or a similar title? This would be a great time to hire someone young that wants to become a coach one day. First name that comes to mind right now is Caroline Ducharme if she doesn’t want to continue her pursuit as a basketball player.

Lara Somfai is in the portal

.-.
I see her as a taller version of Gianna Kneepkens, maybe not super athletic, but a stone cold shooter. And with Azzi leaving, boy do we need shooters.
I noted my "I AM A BELIEVER" comments on the LARA SOMFEI
(specific "RECRUITING THREAD". A Highlight Tape to
consider viewing is "Lara Somfai Basketball Stanford Highlights
2025 -2026. Lara is bigger than Kneepkens, and while Lara
may not be (as of yet) the three point threat that Gianna was,
The Highlight tape reveals how TALENTED Lara is. View it
and come to your own conclusions. Lara a Strong Forward
with Sarah S. and Olivia a Post with the capacity to go to the
perimeter. I see Blanca on the wing with Morgan Cheli.
The Fall will be VERY interesting and competitive. BTY:
Jovana Popovic = a shooting guard/ PG "combo" player??

Olivia is more a PF than a Center. But then again players at UConn are interchangeable. After the loss to SC we really need ladies with some bounce in their sneakers.

With all of those talented players that I had mentioned in the initial post would anyone know how their 3-point shooting is? UConn will need a sharp shooter in the 2027-28 Class.

UConn’s Ayanna Patterson has entered the portal. This opens up another spot on the roster. In all honesty I expected this one. But we are not allowed to comment until it becomes formal.

Although not a definite until we see it, Jovana may fit the bill on that score.
@Basingstoke, yes, more points from the PG position are needed when the team plays top competition, but I agree with @jedmu001 that multiple players who can create off the bounce are needed in this era of Women's College Basketball. Especially when the three-ball is not falling.

I mean we have an elite one coming in next year as a freshman. She already does what SW and JEA cannot, make midrange jumpers and run the court with pace respectively, so I think Olivia is poised to make an impact right away.
Jana can make the mid-range and three-point shot but did not seem to be asked to do it at UConn.

.-.
Tonya Cardoza now following Zam Jones on IG.
Don't know anything about her, but hope she is a complete athletic 2G, or a rough athletic rebounding big, although Jana rebounds nicely for me, just need more toughness and athleticism up front off the bench as well.

With Brady and Patterson leaving Geno and staff needs to reload. We not have three open seats on that bench. Let’s fill them with two guards and a shooter. The portal is loaded and it’s open 24 hours a day. So let’s go shopping.

I think how many open spots in the playing rotation is the more relevant question. And that is -2 or thereabouts.

We have guards; KK, Ashlynn, Kayleigh, Allie, Kelis and Jovana

We have wings; Blanca and Morgan

We have posts; Sarah, Jana, Gandy and Olivia

Our small line up is all set. Our tall line up can be all set depending on how ready the two youngsters are repaired to play.

As mentioned above the Class of 2027 is loaded with 6 foot guards and wings. So it may be vital to save space like someone has mentioned. Come November we will only have two seniors on the team. KK and Ash.

Coach Cardoza is now following Donovyn Hunter (TCU).

NICE HIGHLIGHT VIDEO. I didn't realize the similarities between
UCONN and TCU game and ball flow. If Donovyan comes it would
seem to be an "easy" transition for her.
Donovyn Hunter played 40 minutes in TCU's loss to South Carolina
in the Tournament (78 - 52). She scored 9 points, with one assist, and
FOUR REBOUNDS. She is a Junior. One Game is not a good judge, but
... here are her stats for 2025 - 2026: games played: 38, Minutes
played: 33.8, 10.2 ppg, 3.2 rb/g, 2.1 Assists per game, 1.3 steals per game,
0.3 blocked shots, FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE= 45.7 and Three POINT
% of 33 and change., with a Free Throw % of 70.1. Contrast Ms. Hunter with the potential of Morgan Cheli at 6'2"? and with Allie Ziebell's (6'1") FG % and three-point percentage.
Time will tell!

One or two openings can just happen of course, but it might make sense not to use one of the three spots, to "insure" three could be recruited from the 27 class or two plus a portal transfer. Of course there is another alternative as well, if any portal additions are only a one year rental it doesn't affect the next year at all.

I want to see one post and one guard or wing, maybe leaving the last spot open, and it would be fine if the post was a one year rental.
