In the words of Tom Dienhart from the Purdue Rivals site, Bob Diaco’s defense was “a big reason why the team finished 2-4 and lost its last four games.” Dienhart pointed out that in those last four games, the defense gave up conversions on 49% of third downs and only tallied one takeaway and two sacks. After getting fired by Purdue, Bob Diaco has been fired after three one-year defensive coordinator stints.

Bob Diaco ruining college football one team at a time.

(I have to say the 49% rate of giving up third damn down conversions gave me flashbacks.)

Purdue will be a pretty tough opponent but it could be a harbinger of the balance of the season. A victory would signal that we are going to be a pretty solid football team, I think. Plus I am not all that convinced that Brohm is a great head coach. I see this kind of like the Illinois game where we had a shot. This time we need to make a play.

Diaco getting jobs off the one season where ND got absolutely destroyed defensively by a great Alabama team.

Don't think he's coaching anywhere this year
It’s one thing to be crazy and good (ie John Madden). It’s another to be crazy and bad. His stint at ND carried him for a while. I think now his time is done. He may end up again at a lower tier D1 or FCS school.

I think Free hit the nail on the head here. My friend is a Boiler and he is also not sure about Brohm yet. He yerns for the Brees/Alstott days. An Illinois-type game with us having a better chance of pulling out a W sounds about right.

"After the UConn game, they’ll be traveling to meet their in-state rivals at Notre Dame, so big trap game potential for them against the Huskies, maybe."

Maybe.

All that’s missing are the red pants. I remember that game. The coordinator had the team around him during a time out and the bobster is jumping around outside the huddle. It looked like they didn’t want him inside because he would have screwed things up.

As a Purdue alum, I don’t think we are very good.. probably 5-7 with a strong big ten schedule (and ND and a pac 12 opponent in the OOC), because we hired diaco for last season. Probably was poised to be a solid 7-5 if they had just hired a coordinator like brad lambert a year ago.

that said, we are NOT Illinois lol. Probably easy to look at the Purdue Illinois score from the same year you guys played them and think “oh, like Illinois, only worse.” The game was in a monsoon with OL injuries and new runningbacks.” As a team now, we are a notch up from any illinois team I can remember seeing other than that 2019 team that got on a roll late in the year.

just karlaftis and bell alone…

Our d does not match up well with their offense at all. This game will likely get out of hand early - they have excellent wide receivers and will attack from the get go.

I’m curious what’s your D and team in general like.

Us ..

strengths
a superstar on each side of the ball
an offense that will always create open receivers even without talent (in 2017 there was no moore or bell, Gregory Phillips was not even P5 level)
a lot of young talent that’s been in the program 1-2 years that’s poised to bust out

weaknesses
only 7 players who have established themselves as Big ten level quality starters going into this season
OL has not established depth or physicality in the run game at the big ten level to this point since the end of the 2018 season, only 7.. maybe 6 guys ready to play big ten level football.

we run a 4-3/4-2-5 hybrid that goes back to the year before Diaco but is apparently much more aggressive. George karlaftis cannot be blocked at the G5 level and bell can’t be covered at the G5 level. Probably true for more than half of the big ten too.

By the way.. same message for your championship team from ten years ago as I’d give to Boise state fans…

When you win a big game as a big ten team and both of your tackles are dinged up and your 3rd and 4th tackles aren’t big time players, there ain’t no hiding against New Mexico State or Syracuse. You just beat Wisconsin in a big match up of ranked teams? Well now you’re at Iowa and those tackles are gonna be the focal point of a loss.
