Between the Boneyard being shaky and the game itself, this is not looking good. Polonia still pitching for UConn in the top of the 8th with Huskies down 4-2.

Just no offense at all this weekend

Chris Jones has been talking all game about the effect of launch angle and how the swing for the fences mentality seems to have taken over throughout college baseball. Strikeouts are up all over the place. The game is less fun this way, that is for sure.

Come to think about it, Coach Penders was talking negatively about launch angle and the swing for the fences mentality and its affect on college baseball in the postgame interview yesterday.

Agree, we need fewer Dave Kingman(s) and more Pete Rose type at bats.

Devenney walks with 2 out. Hague pinch hitting for Chris Winkel, who has struck out in about half his at bats so far this season. A balk puts the runner at 2B, Kyler Fedko pinch running.

Need to assess the need to have Chris winkel in there every game. At this point not sure he is hitting his girlfriends weight let alone his. Plus he strikes out a ton for a guy with mediocre power at best.

Based on his career splits he probably should not be starting against lefties (not that we saw any lefties today). All four of his hits on the year are against righties. It may make sense for him to platoon with the right handed hitting Kyler Fedko.

Frank assessment as usual...

Yup, another frank assessment for sure. I believe Penders said their offense has 9 strikeouts and 14 fly outs today. That sort of thing simply does not put any pressure on the defense to makes plays in the field. As he said, the college game is different than the pro game in that regard, you need to put pressure on the other team to make plays in the field. Liked his comment on what has happened in the last 6 times he has seen a bunt in their games.

I guess that depends on whether you believe that the true abilities of Kyler Fedko and Chris Winkel are closer to what they did in the small sample of games from the truncated season from last year, or the small sample of games from the 2 plus weekends of this season. Obviously, I'd like to believe that last season is closer to the mark. However, both players are striking out in close to half of their plate appearances of this season, and I seriously doubt any player has much offensive success in doing that. Coach Penders has now pinched hit for both of them this season, so it is obvious he isn't liking what he has seen so far this season. It is the very rare player who is going to stay in the lineup with that sort of strikeout rate. Coach Penders has been making a big point in post game interviews about putting the ball in play to force the defense to make plays, so I would doubt he will continue to use players if they continue to strikeout at such a big rate. The coaches had been talking about the depth of the team in interviews both in fall ball and in the preseason, so we might find out more about it if Kyler Fedko and Chris Winkel continue with their present strikeout path with a bat in their hands.

Would love to see more ‘smart’ at bats today. Go deeper into counts, move runners along etc. also need smarter base running. Too many outs on the base paths including pick offs. Get the sense this team is talented but lacks savviness

Penders has now mentioned more than once launch angle and this being college ball, not the mlb. It seems he may be having a hard time getting that to sink in for some of the guys. We def need to play smarter, cut down on the strike outs and get the ball in play. Many of these games have been lost by one run and we've left so many on base. It's time to really tighten up our game or we're going to start drowning. Its still early in the season but it is concerning. It's time to get (hopefully) two wins before heading to Texas Tech.
