According to the official stats UConn on the year has stolen 5 bases on 10 attempts, not a good percentage. And then you add in to that 4 runners picked off, and it gets worse. However, I don't mind it so much if a runner on first is thrown out on the bases with two outs, as it would probably take two hits to score the guy, especially for a team that does not show that much in the way of power at the bat. By far the worst offensive moment of the day was Aaron Hill getting picked off with runners on first and third, crushing that potential rally.
Ward was in trouble early, but he got out of much of it before he came out of the game. Penders and the coaches were high on Radue in the preseason interviews, so I suspect he'll get some more chances. They were not at all high on Niego, so who knows when the next time might be when he takes the mound.
Chris Jones was talking about Verdi and his stress fracture in his wrist during yesterday's game. He was thinking that the earliest he might be back would be mid to late March.
