Did I hear Chris Jones right? Verdi has a stress fracture in his wrist?

I think so, I heard him talking about it late... Knew he had an wrist injury (first time I heard it referred to like that). Second or third time he's pinch run so far.

Final: #UConn 6, Lipscomb 4. The Huskies win their fourth straight after erasing a 2-0 deficit. Connecticut now 2-0 in extras this season

Nice one - thought for sure they had pooched it w/ the throwing error.

Game Notes:
  • Vinny Siena extended his hitting streak to a team-best 12 games with a seventh inning double.
  • Aaron Hill picked up his first two collegiate RBIs, including the go-ahead score in the 10th inning.
  • Jack Sundberg now has four consecutive multiple-hit games, after collecting three hits tonight.
  • UConn is now 4-1 (.800) when committing one or fewer errors this season.
  • The Connecticut offense has recorded at least 10 hits in each of the last four games.

It's also nice to have them come from behind like that even after they had given it away. The good thing is that this team has not had too many fielding adventures in the field so far. In previous seasons it would build up and repeat. Great work out of the bullpen, this time from the freshman Ruotolo. The relievers have been doing very well.

Ruotolo, Kay and Zapata have been very impressive. Future looks very bright with the young arms.

“@UConnBaseball: T9: Lipscomb scores twice in the eighth to tie the contest with #UConn at 3-3. Sullivan-Hill-Sundberg due up for the Huskies. #BleedBlue”

Unearned...

Marzi hit first batter (pitched well until then) replaced by Slade.

I was listening to the game while attending the women's basketball senior day festivities. It sounded like Marzi did very well. WHUS switched to the hockey game at 5pm, so I did not hear the UConn aided Lipscomb comeback.

Game Notes

- Vinny Siena extended his hitting streak to 13 games, and has reached base safely in 18 straight contests. Both streaks date back to last season.
- Anthony Marzi's seven innings pitched marked the most for a UConn starting pitcher in a game this season. He is now ninth all-time in program history with 223.1 innings pitched and 15th all-time with 161 strikeouts.
- Aaron Hill drew his seventh walk of the season, the freshman leads the squad with seven bases on balls in eight games.
- Lipscomb's run in the 10th inning snapped a 19-inning streak without allowing an earned run for the UConn bullpen.

You just hate it when this team appears to beat themselves. A wild pickoff attempt last night almost cost them the game and tonight the failed pickoff attempt by Slade led to the tie. Then the inability to throw a strike and walk in the winning run is just a no-no. Hate to see them let that game get away the way it did.

Due to incoming weather, today's game against Lipscomb has been moved up an hour to 1pm eastern time, according to the Lipscomb website and a Chris Jones comment during the baseball broadcast yesterday. UConn athletics website and baseball twitter is still saying 2pm eastern, but they are wrong.

A new year and the same boneheaded base running mistakes continue to plague Huskies baseball. Siena gets picked off early and then Hill with first and third and two out gets picked off first. Why? Struggling for base runners and runs you can't have these mistakes. Just inexcusable.

Third guy just picked off. They are getting runners on base every inning mostly by walks and getting them in scoring position with less than 2 outs but not able to make contact in keys situations. Apparently this is the weekend for no offense so hopefully they will have their offense next weekend against Florida. Doesn't help when making so many costly blunders on the bases.

You can't put runs up against a team avg giving up 7 a game.....

Series against the gators can be downright painful with this team

Getting hammered in the 8th. Gave up 7 runs so far and down 9-0. Going with some of the guys that have gotten many opportunities Radue and Niego and both getting hit hard. Ward who pitched a solid game probably shouldn't have started the inning given his past arm issues and he was over a 100 pitches to start the inning gave up 2 doubles to start the inning and then was pulled.

Fugly ending... http://www.uconnhuskies.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/030214aaa.html

Game Notes

- Blake Davey's home run in the ninth inning was the first of his UConn career.
- Vinny Siena singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, dating back to last season. Siena has hit safely in all nine games this year and has reached base safely in 20 consecutive games, dating back to 2013.
- Aaron Hill connected on a fifth-inning single and has reached base in eight of nine games this season.
- Brian Ward had a season-high seven strikeouts in seven-plus innings of work, also a new 2014-best mark.

UConn returns to action next weekend when it travels to Gainesville, Fla. for a three-game set with No. 23 Florida. Game one against the Gators is set for a 7 p.m. first pitch on Friday, March 7, before a 3 p.m. start on March 8 and a 1 p.m. matinee on March 9.

Illinois swept Florida 6-0 and 4-0 this weekend.

According to the official stats UConn on the year has stolen 5 bases on 10 attempts, not a good percentage. And then you add in to that 4 runners picked off, and it gets worse. However, I don't mind it so much if a runner on first is thrown out on the bases with two outs, as it would probably take two hits to score the guy, especially for a team that does not show that much in the way of power at the bat. By far the worst offensive moment of the day was Aaron Hill getting picked off with runners on first and third, crushing that potential rally.

Ward was in trouble early, but he got out of much of it before he came out of the game. Penders and the coaches were high on Radue in the preseason interviews, so I suspect he'll get some more chances. They were not at all high on Niego, so who knows when the next time might be when he takes the mound.

Chris Jones was talking about Verdi and his stress fracture in his wrist during yesterday's game. He was thinking that the earliest he might be back would be mid to late March.
