There are several ways to go about building a team given that you have 10 or 12 or 15 players for 5 months, beginning in November.

Lets look at two:
A. Give every player on the roster a somewhat equal number of minutes per game; then minimize having your 5 least skilled players on the floor at the same time.

B. Establish the teams baseline performance level with your 5 best players. Then add players to the mix based on how the baseline performance is affected.

Using method A - we can speculate as to what the teams performance level might be, come March. Possible a good team; but, probably not an optimum performance team.

Using method B - build your teams baseline performance with your 5 best players. Then add a 6th without the team baseline being adversely affected. Then, add a 7th and an 8th. When the level of play falls apart on the floor, replace that 6th, 7th or 8th so that the team can get back to baseline.

The task is to build a cohesive team from the 10 players on the roster.

At UConn, we can see this play out right now and in this way:

In Phase 1 - the baseline 5 were: Bueckers, Edwards, Mühl, Arnold and Griffin. Few would disagree with this five.

In Phase 2 - Shade was added to the mix to great effect and so there are now 6 in that baseline group. Starting Shade over Griffin is for balance and an expected energy lift from the bench.

In Phase 3 (which is where we are now) Brady is the current focus and she is progressing rather nicely, with the baseline group heading toward 7.

In Phase 4 - Samuels is up next and she is going to be number 8 in the group.

Phase 5 - Bettencourt, followed by DeBerry, will continue to get mop-up minutes at the end of games. Their minutes will increase once the group of 8 are fully bedded in.

It's been a joy to watch the evolution of Geno's teams over the years.

In prior years there was a returning nucleus where the starting phase would be somewhere between Phase 2 and 3 from above.

This year the starting Phase has been totally affected by injuries to 4 players that were expected to be in the initial baseline group. Now with 4 Frosh, Geno has had to step way back and begin to build a team somewhat along the lines as described above.

It's going to be a fun team to watch. Sooo, buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Phase 1 and 2 were interrupted by injuries so Geno had to start from scratch on Phase X where you had to throw some freshmen in to see if they would sink or swim. Plus He didn't know if we would have Caroline so onto Phase X-A. So we had a base of 4 .....Paige, Nika , Aubrey and Aaliayh and had to see which Freshmen fit into that base.
Geno finally decided on Paige, Nika, Aaliyah, Shade and KK with Aubrey coming in like a shot of adrenaline. Ice and Q as backups and Amari and Ines holding down the bench.

The team is what it is (built from recruiting over several years), what your describing is the utilization of those recruited members, not building a team.

You needed all this analysis to understand what Auriemma has already done? And method A is something a HS coach would do, not a college coach who gets paid to win games.

It appears a few BY authors wish they had written this. THIS IS an OPINION board--professionals are paid for their opinions--we are amateurs.
From my memory, this positing reflects Geno's approach in other Lean years.

What you say would be true if we had 3 or 4 normal years in a row---how I miss those daze. However these past 3 maybe 4 year have not been normal. Now Uconn WCBB team is loaded with freshmen, 2 Seniors with 4 years of experience, one with off and on game time--with injures--albeit with tremendous talent, an undersized Senior post, a bench of walking or almost walking wounded. over worked Seniors and 4 technically or actual freshmen--All that's holy I'm thankful for those Frosh.
Geno, the Coaching staff (what a great group) would love to have had all they recruited these past 4 year available and ready, no injuries--that just isn't the case..

The mix, is the issue, Paige spoke of Chemistry and in a top team it is IMPORTANT, it is developing. The greatest part of this team is --who and what they are--tough minded, confident, hard working, not to be denied KIDS. You've got to love them top to end of the bench!!

We have a lot of Boneyarders that aren’t coaches or former players that might appreciate @Big Mick point of view. I hear from people that don’t know much about basketball that are too intimidated to post. They like having things explained for them. there’s no need to discourage people from posting thoughts that might be helpful to others

I totally appreciate BIG MICK's point of view and agree with it. I was just adding my thoughts on the injury issues. Didn't mean to make it sound like a disagreement. Just random thoughts on my part.
And yeah, i do wish I had written it. lol

Method A is something a bad HS coach would do. Any coach who doesn't build his rotation around his best 5 shouldn't be coaching any team that isn't called little dribblers.

Except that Phase 1 was actually Buekers, Edwards, Fudd, Mühl, and Ducharme.
