I don’t think Samson has any chance with Dainja.

Will be interesting to see how DH plays these defensive matchups and who he has faith in on that end. Seeing how the roster/rotation shapes up may be the most interesting element of this season. This year truly has to be a master class in coaching if this team wants to win another as they are not going to out talent the top tier this year. It’s going to be out executing or using depth to wear down, or both.

Right now it feels like there are two draft picks/NBA players on this roster in AK and Liam. The last two years we’ve had 5-6. There’s a few other guys that have potential to get there but certainly not there yet.
Samson has no chance with Dainja. I would think Reed, Jr. starts and hopefully Dainja and Reed, Jr. swap fouls and when they both have 2 they sit, and Johnson comes in and does have a good chance on Cisse. That also opens up Karaban and McNeeley for some post play.

Hurley doesn’t operate that way. It will be the same starting lineup. We lose a couple games he could change it.
Who is out best on-ball defender? While Hurley doesn't mess with the starting lineup other than from weekly practice effort/results, he did put Castle on different position players.

Diarra can be a pest on D, but I don't think he's right for Haggerty. I might see when defensively we swap in Ross or Stewart (arguably our best athletes) to defend him since Haggerty could play 1-4 for them so won't always be a guard anyway.

Feels about right. Early season nobody knows what to expect. We could win by 15 or be in a close one.

I was expecting it to open more like -11.5 (in which case I probably bet Memphis).

Agree that this is a game where AK and LM are gonna feast - that’s where the mismatch is.

I don't see a reason why Ball can't guard Haggerty, as far as size, physical tools, and athleticism. He just has to show us he can do it.
There is a lot of things that make me scratch my head as to why Solo doesn’t do more of it. Needs to find some inner dawg, as he would be a beast if he could surface a little. But with you in that give him the chance and see what he can do, as I’m waiting for him to breakout in areas other than threes. You see small glimpses here and there and has the physical traits, but not a consistent across game or game to game.

Check Memphis record, who they played, and scoring margin of victory. See who was their best players, how deep their bench is, etc... all signs point to > 8.5 for UConn. Would say if betting, see the +/- and decide if "over" is your best bet.
How do you figure that? They beat a good Missouri team. We haven't played anybody as good as the worst team they've played. I would not touch -8.5 until I see UConn play a legitimate D1 team. Maybe we win by 16. Maybe we struggle facing actual defense for the first time and win by 3.

Yeah I’m a bit worried. Just feel like the last year and half (since February 2023) has been too amazing to us. Brand new squad here and Memphis is no pushover. Would love to be wrong but I don’t think we win by double digits.

Totally agree with this. This game is a very very tough bet as I could see playing out a number of ways. If Memphis tries and can slow this one way down, hits threes like they have, I can see a grinder keeping it close. So who is able to dictate pace will be key.

Death by Depth - is my 'by-line' for this year ( until otherwise )
thinking most games will be similar ( In score) as what we have experienced so far , tight in 1st half, then stretch in 2nd half, final diff will be dictated by opponent quality

UConn -12

This year is going to be an interesting and I think bumpy ride.

Last years team is already aging well as Clingan is every bit the defensive monster at the next level as he was in college. He already looks better 15 games in than he did at the start of the season.

Steph has already being called a generational talent in SA.

Spencer was a great college bb player.

So was Tristen and the throw in AK. We did not hit our stride until Steph and DC both were 100% and the we were not beatable and as Hurley put it bullet proof.

We should be tempering our expectations about this team.

They are going to go through spurts in each tough game that will be maddening but I think we will win the BE and get a high seed and then we shall see. I do think this team will grow more as the year goes on than last years team. We kind of knew from the get go last year that once we got healthy we would be tough to beat.

The fun or should I say the stress starts this week…..Let’s Go Huskies…..

But a lot lighter in the wallet over the past two tourneys lol
Some PC fans, according to their posts on Friar Talk, who we know for the most part hate UConn, were happy with last year's team as they made $. One post I remember said, "UConn winning it all was easy money in the bank.".

Because neither Memphis nor Missouri are great teams and that matchup was sloppy and foul laden. Memphis has 2 bench guys they play with any decent minutes and their starters are prone to fouls.

We can win this keying on Haggerty and perhaps Alex gets on him on D. We have legitimately deep bench and our offensive sets tire out teams - why would anyone think Memphis with 7 guys is going to do much in the 2nd half? Fouls and tiring will limit them.

Just feeling like this team is better than we think but not as good as last year but can get there.

We shall see soon enough.

So Memphis is 4-0.
  • Missouri by 8
  • UNLV by 6
  • Ohio by 24
  • San Francisco by 4

I say hit -8.5 like a tree on the forest moon of Endor.
Concerned how much more battle tested they are than us. Also our first time away from home.

Haggerty is 6'3". Really doubt Alex gets him.

That’s why it’s called gambling.

But one could easily make the case that UConn deserves the benefit of the doubt on spreads and outplaying what’s expected by Vegas.

I’m not too worried about who we’ve played as a predictor in this game. You either think we can win by 9+ or you don’t. There’s at least as many reasons to believe that we will.

Memphis takes a BPI seat well below UConn and we have a 73.7% win prob.

Their bench is 2 quality players deep; ours is 4+.

AP writers have us at 2; coaches have us at 2; Memphis is ~35th

Sure anything can happen but going chalk has been working fine under Hurley.

Once we play this game, maybe. But right now we haven't played a team that wasn't truly awful and yet still didn't look all that crisp. I have very high hopes for this team. Maybe a threepeat. But there's a risk this team never really lives up to that. I did not feel that risk the last two seasons. So, first game against a real opponent, that's one I'll sit out. I bet on both the last two teams to win it all before the season started. I didn't this year.

You can’t picture the guy who burns sage at Gampel and talks about “journaling” being into TM? Hurleys talked about meditation being part of his deal.
My comment was partially in jest but Danny's hyperactivity doesn't necessarily lend itself to the daily, two to three 25-30 minute meditation sessions recommended by TM followers. He also may not be a fan of the lack of productivity during that time.

It would not surprise me however if when he was having emotional issues three decades ago that something such as TM was introduced to him as a way to calm his anxiety.

He's mentioned it many times that he starts his day doing meditation as a way to help with his mental health issues. Search for all those shows and podcasts he went on this past offseason. He mentioned it in most of them.
