UConn -2.5 vs USF....

USF fan, new to this board. I have been posting on your WBB board.

I was just curious as to whether you are CONFLICTED about having UCF as a rival?

I always thought that if UCONN was to take a Florida rival, especially in FB, that it would have to be USF, considering our historical record against each other. I doubt that either of us have played more competitive close games against any other school. The spread this week clearly reflects that historical fact, which is the game really is a pick-em with you getting the nod being at home:

SERIES: USF leads, 7-5

IN TAMPA: USF leads, 5-1

IN HARTFORD: UConn Leads, 4-

LAST MEETING: 2014, USF won 17-14 in Tampa

• Last 8 meetings between USF & UConn decided by average of 4.3 points.

As for USF and UCF, unfortunately, we are now conference rivals, but USF fans have never wanted a rivalry with UCF. Perhaps, because we considered our real rivals to be UF, FSU and Miami, in whatever sport we played them.

UCF, on the other hand has always wanted USF as its rival in all sports.

As for USF and UCONN, besides FB, we have had a much more competitive historical rivalry in most other sports, than you have had with UCF.

As such, given the choice, I would much rather have USF be the rival of UCONN than UCF, any day of the week. :p

Nobody on this board or attending games actually had a say in who our made up rival was to be.

Since BC is back on our schedule, there is a no brainer.

Did you say anything after the highlighted sentence? My head exploded and both my eyes popped out.

Hey, maybe Auriema, will make a conflict trophy for USF. We are probably the closest thing he has to a "rival" in this conference. We once tied you in regulation @Uconn, but, of course, lost in OT. I asked our WBB coach to show that tape to the team this year, as motivation. Whether we beat UConn or not sometime this season, our primary goal is to make it to the final 4. That could happen, with our current team.

Please for the love of Bob Diaco..........go back to the WBB board. Please.

Hasn't it been BC that has kept UCONN out of the ACC?

That, in an of itself, is reason enough to REALLY HATE them. LOL

Exactly our point. Not to mention we B**&^*^Slapped them in our Hockey East opener last year. Yeah..."most" of us hate BC.

Good for you. They deserved it.

Surprisingly, for a Florida school, USF has always had a really good "club" hockey team. I doubt that we are going to ever make that into a full sport. However, I would love to watch UCONN play an exhibition game against our club hockey team, just to see what the difference is in the level of competition.

UConn has club hockey too (my roommate played). They typically never travel outside of the Northeast though, but I bet if you arranged a game over spring break for them they might make the trek.

That's interesting.

I'll pass that info along and perhaps something can come of it.

You're right about the competitiveness of the UConn/USF games. Since we became conference rivals in '05, there's only been one game decided by more than 7 points.

2005 - UConn 15 USF 10
2006 - USF 38 UConn 16
2007 - UConn 22 USF 15
2008 - USF 17 UConn 13
2009 - UConn 29 USF 27
2010 - UConn 19 USF 16
2011 - UConn 16 USF 10
2012 - USF 13 UConn 6
2013 - USF 13 UConn 10
2014 - USF 17 UConn 14

Both teams look like they're on their way back up so it should be another good battle on Saturday.

Looks that way.

Seem like you always had a great FG kicker, who never missed, at least against us.

I wouldn't be surprised, if a FG was once again the difference between winning and losing.

Whichever team wins, will carry the much needed momentum into the tough upcoming conference games, in pursuit of a bowl game.

I know in the case of USF, at least, this is a MUST win game, in order for us to have any chance of going bowling.

Our coach will likely keep his job, even if we only end up winning five games. However, most fans, I'm sure, won't be happy with that number of victories. Of course, they don't get to decide on whether he is fired. For me, I'd keep him regardless, especially with the UCLA transfer QB, A Woulard, sitting out, with three more years of eligibility remaining. FWIW, He was named the #1 QB in the ESPN Competition a few years ago, when he was previously a USF verbal, before electing to sign with UCLA.

Our offense is on a roll and will score 35 or more.

I'd like to say the same thing about USF, after scoring 45 points on SU. However, without putting myself through the misery of looking back the past few years, we struggled to get even 20 points in most games.

So, I'm not expecting another high scoring game by USF @Uconn.

Having said that, our coach, apparently, thinks we will be more of an offensive team the rest of the season:

Ironically, you're spot on. Not sure why Diaco picked UCF when we have a history with USF, but whatever.

I just presumed he selected UCF to be your rival, because he thought at the time, that they would be the team to beat in the foreseeable future.

But, UCF has already fallen on hard times, and might not win a single game this year.

I also thought by selecting a Florida school as a rival, that it might help your recruiting in Florida. But, I don't know if that had any bearing on his thought process. Rutgers, under Schiano, had a great deal of success in recruiting our state.

But, as you say, "Whatever." LOL

You hit the nail on the head - the "conFLiCT" is 100% about recruiting. If I had to guess, I'd say Diaco picked UCF as a "rival" because they were just in a Fiesta Bowl. I don't think he envisioned such a quick and disastrous demise since he conjured it up 1 year ago. But I absolutely agree with you and everyone else who said that our true Florida rival is USF. All of our games seem to come down to the last possession of the 4th quarter - often by a kick with no time left. It's not a heated/hated rivalry by any means, but I think both teams and fanbases always strap up the chinstraps and expect a full 60 minute battle when we play.

.-.
USF is indeed our rival, much more so than UCF. Close games, with heartbreaking moments on both sides. Every game is competitive.

I suspect that if USF was 200 miles from campus instead of 1300 miles, this game would be all that we talk about. But to me, it's always felt like a real rivalry. I think I'll go out and buy a $6 trophy to make it official. Of course, I'm only going to put the scores of the games that we've won... ;)

We also came into the big east the same year so we are kind of like a sibling rivalry. By the way the right way to do a trophy is to have a cup at the top to drink out of. Dont care what it is called

Batshyt Bob is at 100 level trophy creation.

If USF was the one who beat Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl, we'd have a trophy with USF right now. Diaco was just trying to revive swagger. He did that. Crazy way of doing it, but it worked.

Ucf was at the pinnacle when Diaco announced the rivalry. Usf was in the same rut as uconn.

From the history Bugsy posted, we might need only 19 or 20. If USF's defense is decent I think 25-30 would be a good showing assuming our defense bends but doesn't break.

To the OP, Diaco has said part of the reason for creating the ConFLiCT was because of the respect he had for O'Leary, I think as a younger coach he probably looked up to the older guy. Maybe if Leavitt was still USF's coach Diaco might have gone for USF too (but maybe the fact that we beat UCF last year was a factor too).
