UConn “Mid-Major”?

I've read it quite a few times. I don't see the words mid-major anywhere.

Perhaps it is you who is incapable of reading.
Perhaps it is me, but I doubt it. The following is a copy of post #12 on this thread with the term mid-major highlighted in red. Post #12 in bold was a copy and paste from the article.

The No. 5 ranking showcases UConn as the top mid-major recruiter out of the Big East; the next highest ranking school outside of the power conferences is Marquette at No. 16.

Being a UConn fan would be a lot more fun if so many other UConn “fans” were not so invested in the failure of the athletic program.

UConn is not in the Big 10. We all get it. Got anything else?

I am not sure I understand your comment. Did you fully read the thread to understand the context? No one here is advocating failure for a program. Just the opposite actually.

AI hallucinates

Actually that post did do that. UConn having the fifth best recruiting class in the nation, the highest ranked of the mid majors. Hahaha.
We are mid-major in the same sense that Gonzaga is. That is, we are not in a power 4 league. Nor are we Notre Dame. It is feasible, at least right now, to still be competitive in basketball and baseball under that scenario.

Whether that remains viable in the post NIL/House era is an open question. The proposal to expand the NCAA tournament to in effect open more slots for the P4 bu pushing most 1 bid league teams into an expanded “ first four” isn’t going to help on the basketball side. And as we just saw in baseball, the last 4 in were all P4 teams. Look for a similar development in basketball coming. And playing 8 games against the likes of Georgetown, Butler, DePaul and Seton Hall, teams that hurt your NET just by getting off the bus at the arena, isn’t helping.

Mid major like "blue blood" means different things to different people. Originally conferences were designated mid major, not schools. The big east is considered a "power conference" in basketball so clearly we are not a mid major there. In football, since we are an independent and not a member of a mid major conference, we're definitely not a mid major school. We are an independent.

Now, if mid major gets redefined by athletic department budget size, cleary, we wouldn't be a mid major there either given that our spending is roughly equivalent to a mid-level P4 school.

If mid major merely means you're not a member of the power conferences, then I guess we would fall into that definition, but it seems counterintuitive based upon our athletic performance and the historic definitions of that term.

.-.
I think that the term is sport specific, not overarching. Would someone describe Cornell or Johns Hopkins as being mid major in lacrosse?

Probably not but there are only a handful of actual powers. It is more like hockey. BU is decidedly mid-major except in one ”boutique” sport. The difference is lacrosse doesn’t create these single sport leagues but they have a bunch of small leagues with associate members. The Nbe includes Denver. TheA10 has Hobart. The ACC has only 5 teams. Many major powers don’t even play the sport. So the term is not really applicable. These types of sports exist in a different atmosphere.

UConn baseball is mid-major? What a joke. Uconn beat UNC this season. They also took 2 of three from Miami. And, at last check those programs are still fighting for Omaha and the CWS.
