Poor Australia. Haven't they seen the US squads enough

There's an article about how Australia created its Australian Institute of Sport, a residential high school dedicated to creating top athletes in basketball that has populated the world with top pros, both men and women. Sounds as though they've created a strong system.

Based on the U19 rosters, 9-12 players are from the institute.

Fudd came in as one of the first off the bench. Made a nice full court assist. A corner 3 and a nice tough post assist (in the first few miniutes) to Betts and smarts on positional defense. She looks great and plays a very unselfish game. I am very happy.

3 have offers from big schools
3 are double bottom age players eligible for next u19s
like most teams, a couple of big outs due to injury or other circumstances.

DeBerry only one not getting minutes. I do think Geno may have to push Azzi to shoot and drive more. Maybe too unselfish.

Edit: DeBerry in. Got her first bucket. Looks a bit slow to me but looks stronger as well.

Azzi does seem reluctant to get to her spot and shoot. I suspect she’s trying to be unselfish, although when you are a great scorer, you need to score. Geno & Azzi’s BFF will take care of that issue.

On the other hand, Azzi is moving well and digging in on defense. So whatever physical issue she may have had doesn’t appear to be bothering her.

As far as I can see, Azzi is really on top of the defensive calls and guiding others. Her one drive into the mid range was sweet. She is a perfect UConn player I give her my seal of approval. ;)

On the other hand, I was really surprised Caitlin seems to force so much.

DeBerry did not look good on defense to me. I do not see quick lateral movement. She got taken by one of their players in the post way to easy.

But there is some real talent. PaoPao has improved alot , Citron looks like a stud. ND is going to be much improved, Johnson and Ware are tough as advertised and Betts is frighteningly good.

Deberry falls for pump fakes and uses her hands A LOT on defense. I see foul trouble and a lot of riding the bench in her future if it's not corrected immediately.

I picked up the game mid-way in the 2nd qtr. Azzi looked good. DeBerry not so much. I can see why she's playing behind Ware and Betts.
She was out of position on several defensive plays, and gave up position for a score and a foul on another. On the other end, she got mugged several times by the opposing post, but it didn't get called. I was not impressed by the officiating either. Good win the the USA team.

Fudd played well. She can do everything within reason.
She can't get the ball enough however when also playing with Johnson and Clark.
The only way she can make a big impact when playing with both of those players is for every time she touches the ball - just go one-on-one. But that's not what she wants to do - she wants to move and knock down shots or have other team over commit and take a few quick dribbles.
She also likes to pass and does it well.

DeBerry is young.

Yes. The coaches will correct that. She needs work coming in. Out of position a lot, also didn't step up to contest several shots she should/could have. No doubt about that. Let's see how she looks at the beginning of conference play. This was the first time I've seen DeBerry play. I need to see more before I form an opinion of her. One game is not enough to really judge a player.

Sonia Citron didn't seem to start, but got a lot of PT in the first half. What many of us Benchers have noticed is how aggressive she is on defense, fighting to get off screens and beating drivers to the spot. Offensively, she drives a lot, which may be why ND Coach Niele Ivey uses the Jackie Young references (Jackie drove to the hole a lot her frosh year).

Spear can shoot the three when she's open.

Follow-up after second half: Spear finishes with 14 and Citron 15 to join Clark, Betts and Johnson in double figures. Betts had 9 rebounds and Citron right behind her with 7...in 15 minutes+ of play. Lots of unselfish play when team played best.
