Larry, this is how the big boys do it. They don't view the football coaching position spot as a place to reconnect with and bring back an old pal. They view it as making a serious attempt to get the best candidate possible . . . Is Texas going to get Saban? Probably not, this probably more a smart ploy by agent to further improve Nick's leverage. Could UConn? Not unless Bob Burton wants to fund the "coaching chair" for $20 million a year. But this reflects big-time thinking, something that was missing in January 2011 and will be crucial during the search for the next coach.

You have an odd obsession with Larry McHugh.

And you need to at least read the story instead of posting 2 seconds after the post is put up. Yikes. Think Larry did a good job with the last hire, Fish?

So you are advocating a Board of Trustees member go rogue?

Nope, I'm advocating that if there are football supporters on the Board of Trustees they think big-time when the next hire. Characterizing UT trying to lure Saban as "rogue" is a stretch, too. Let's say they guy who wanted Saban did it the "proper" way and called a meeting to get approval to talk to Saban or the agent. How long do you think it would take until that leaked out? keeping it way below the radar was the right move.

The story is a day old, Mr. Cronkite. Your editorial take on it was older yet.

But, the point stands...when you've mentioned a trustee for the 20th time, you've starting to dip a toe into the HFD-crazy pool.

There's nothing new or unique or even 'big time' about what Texas did - outside of it being Saban. Schools will back-channel coaches at every level.

yeah I know the story's a day old. I was actually not surgically attached to a computer yesterday (nice day and all that). looked to see if this had been posted already. Didn't see it. I'm not allowed to post a story that relates to UConn's situation? They have regents, we have trustees. We have a trustee who screwed up the last hire. Something that to this day has not been publicly acknowledged. Remember this?

And easy with the patronizing tone there at the end. I know this happens a lot in the "big-time". I want that standard here the next time the coach is hired; I hope Warde/Sue are doing it now. "Hey Mark Richt we'll take you if Georgia fires ya" (an example, not debating his merits specifically). Big-time in no way characterizes the way Edsall was replaced.

Nah... more pointing towards this part as being the rogue part - "Hall is under impeachment investigation by the state House of Representatives and lawmakers have complained that he has tried to force out university President Bill Powers, who has been a strong advocate for Brown. Steve Hicks has been among the regents backing Powers in a public spat that has embroiled the board members and state lawmakers for more than a year."

This is Texas politics at it's best/worst.

Just a quick look at reality. In 2012 Texas had football revenues of $103.8 million and a profit of $77.9 million. By comparison UConn in 2009/2010 they had football revenues of $14.4 million with no profit from the football program. I am guessing UConns 2012 football revenue were not much different than the numbers quoted.

Texas can afford to pay more for a coach than UConn has in revenue for football. Big difference. UConn cannot be Big Time like Texas can be big time.

Head-to-head financially, no doubt about that. But on the other hand, Texas can give just as many scholarships as UConn. What is needed is a below-the-radar charismatic leader with a proven record (and feisty with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder) who can look at the infrastructure already in place here and say 'this is do-able'. Like a certain hard-ass Irishman we know.
