Two-time WNBA champion Cappie Pondexter has been released by the Los Angeles Sparks, leaving her free to sign with another team.

The 35-year-old guard averaged 3.6 points and 10.3 minutes in 13 games this season. Pondexter won two WNBA championships in Phoenix. She has also played for New York and Chicago during her career. She was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2006 draft.

One of the all time greats--her/DT/Taylor were an incredible 3 man combo in Phoenix. They likely win a couple more titles had they stuck together. Hopefully she gets picked up somewhere else.

Makes sense to drop Cappie though since LA is set at the 1-3 spots with Gray/Sims/Beard/Carson/Williams. They probably think it's worth grooming Wiese and Samuelson over keeping a declining player like Cappie who probably takes up significantly more cap space.

As a side note--Vadeeva looks like she's starting to get in her groove at LA, had a good showing last night (6 points, 6 boards, 2 assists, 3 blocks in 19 minutes) against Liz Cambage.

I read a long article (some years ago) about how some (many) guards' skills start to fall off about Cappie's age. Not all players have the same issues, of course, and the article argued it was also affected by what sort of game you played and whether you could adjust your game to remain productive. Sue Bird, as an example, doesn't play exactly the same game she did years ago, but she continues to play at a high level. Others, not always able to keep it up. I always thought Katie Smith played a bit too long, although, she did transition her game to bring other things to the table.
