The Caitlin Clark phenomenon is absolutely insane, it's been two seasons of her crushing TV #'s and it just keeps amping up. The men's TV #'s are also really good. I really wish they were putting all the games on CBS and ABC/ESPN. It makes it much harder pulling great #'s on TBS and TruTV.

We keep hearing all that matters is football, yes college football is huge but college basketball especially the tournament is a cash cow and it's still largely untapped.

The biggest reason why basketball doesn't mean as much as football is because the NCAA keeps about 70% of the NCAA tournament revenue which kills UConn specifically but all major basketball schools not in a power 5 league.

Ironically, hopefully the womens ratings continue to increase and the conferences realize there's another income stream from womens hoops -- that could help our cause into a power league.

I've never understood why the onus has always been on men's college basketball to fund everything.

They've done a great job promoting her over the men's game

The football higher-ups want what the Tournament has but they'll never get it. They'd rather burn it down than leave it be

It's not going to be burned down but they're probably going to add more teams at some point which is stupid.

The NCAA used to have the regular season TV rights for college football, but in the 80s the Supreme Court ruled that the schools should have the rights. Some schools were already in conferences, and so those schools decided they could have better selling power as conferences. So eventually the rest of the schools all joined conferences. The same is true for basketball regular season.

Because March Madness is an actual NCAA event, they still control the broadcast rights. College football never had playoffs, they just had random bowls with sponsors who could sell the rights and the AP or whomever naming a champion. Eventually those bowls and the conferences got together and started the BCS to determine an actual national champion. Since it's never been an NCAA event, they can't control the TV rights. Essentially, the bowls were too popular/powerful by the time the NCAA started doing its own championships and they couldn't supplant them like they did with the NIT. It's also probably the case that the bowl structure being so loose also prevented it, too. Everybody had random agreements with everyone. It took over a decade to form the BCS.

College basketball is a cash cow if you are in a power conference. Not so much for the Big East and mid-major conferences because the selection committee favors the power conferences during the selection process.

someone needs to pelican brief this story
Supreme Court ruling aside, NCAA Football expenses are so much higher than Basketball that they depend on their Media revenue splits.

A good example is our next opponent, the University of Alabama.

In 2023 they operated in a deficit:

"The Crimson Tide reported $199.9 million in total operating revenues and $212 million in total operating expenses. The 2023 fiscal year ran from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023."

In Basketball, their fiscal year 2023 Revenue was 20.6 million and expenses were $12.834 million.

In Football, their fiscal year 2023 Revenue was $129.3 million and total operating expenses $83.33 million.

Largely untapped? The NCAA reserved 85% of stadium capacity for themselves to sell at a markup. Sports betting on the event has gotten ridiculous. If anything it’s over-tapped

The sport is horrible at marketing itself.

This is true - I think they’ve been pretty good at marketing the women this year, but the men not even close. Especially the big East

Star power is what draws occasional fans to watch a game /they are following the NBA marketing model of promoting stars
Because the women stay for four years, they are able to develop extraordinary players who generally
Stay at the same school
Think about Donovan Clingan playing 4 years
Also wcbb has at least 3 generational players
Caitlin Clark Paige and juju in the same year
Having followed wcbb pretty closely for over 30 years the game has also improved dramatically
It will be interesting to see if the trend continue

I've asked the question for years and have still yet to find a valid explanation in print.
Could it be the individual bowls pay so much that the P leagues believe they'll net more money to their teams with the system the way it is?
Lots of bloated staffs and overhead to pay for today.

This is all true. And it is why men’s basketball markets the coaches while the women market the players as the primary reps. Hurley is likely to be at UConn for a while. I doubt many of the players will be. Clingan will be in Indianapolis or someplace next year. There has always been some turnover and some focus on coaches but when yo think of historic teams it’s Ewing, Alcindor, Walter Berry, Ernie D and Marvin Barnes.
