All police everywhere use judgement every day.

I'm suggesting the campus police use poor judgement.

(Exhibit B; UConn LB, Mike Osiecki, 18, was arrested on April 5 after allegedly taking a candy bar from a display in the UConn Co-Op and walking out without paying.)
well, there are instances where discretion ought to be used and they don't use it. No question. But I'm not sure that a case of a 50 year old man (or however old the guy is) walking out with t-shirts, socks, and a key chain or whatever else it was is one of those instances. That goes well beyond just swiping a candy bar. With the candy bar you make sure he pays for it and you embarrass the hell out of him. In this case, I think an arrest was warranted.

I wasn't there, so you may be right. But given their track record, the campus police do not deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Is it our goal to not only bash our president, AD, league, HC, offense and anything else you can think of but to also embarrass one of our incoming players?

This thread is useless.

one might argue that any embarrassment was caused by the local fire official who tried to walk off with t-shirts and such without paying, no?

As for our President, she is doing a nice job of building on the work of her predecessors, though she hardly has earned an award for her handling of our athletic programs, which are of secondary or perhaps tertiary importance to her. The league is a mess, made up of a few serious athletic programs, a handful of serious academic institutions, 1 or two who fit both definitions, and a bunch of places who are neither. The commissioner is a good guy who has the wrong skill set to lead the league at this time, and the athletic director is a guy who should have had a long career in the MAC. He is not a big time thinker or strategist. This is reality. Once again it is not the fault of posters on a message board. They didn't create that situation.

In many respects, this thread shows the same fuzzy thinking that shows up on any thread about the NCAA and the APR penalties. It was the cops fault for arresting a guy. It was Emmert's fault for imposing a penalty on UConn. The fact that the guy in question tried to steal a bunch of stuff doesn't play into the narrative somehow. The fact that UConn saw its APR plunge from 980 to 909, to 846 to 828 over a 4 year period is ignored. It is never the fault of the guy who breaks the rule. it is the fault of the guy who enforces it for doing his job.

How about you give me your personal information and I'll do a complete background check on you for the sixty something years you've been on the planet.

I'll then post it on here. I doubt that we will be calling you Jesus anytime soon.

If there is no record of wrong doing it only means you didn't get caught.

It says he's currently on worker's comp. I hate to jump to conclusions, but it makes me wonder what his "injury" is, how long he's been on it, and whether being head of the union helped him with his claim. Like I said I hate to jump to conclusions b/c for all I know he got hurt pulling kids out of a burning building, but the cynic in me thinks that's probably not the case.

I've had 2 back operations and my left leg had to be re-broken after incidents on the job. It's an unfortunate part of the business that some of us end up fighting to stay in the game while others (a very few) make it hard to hold your head up. It's a tiny minority but they exist in all professions whether they're scamming the system or front-running the markets. I don't know what happened here but looking the other way isn't the answer.

I don't think you'll find many boneyarders who have ever been i) arrested - for anything or, ii) committed any form of larceny beyond stealing a nudie mag at age 12 and some extra pens at work at age 37. On occasion there are arrests and crimes in the news that don't need the spot light for whatever reason, but I think those are rare. I'm of the opinion that we need to shine the light of public shame on as many people as possible everyday for their criminal actions. Public shame can be effective. And the kid will have to get over it, there will be many other greater challenges in life than having the public learn your Dad is a bum. Many people have bum's for Dads and they move on. The kid will just have to learn to keep his chin up and make a name for himself, alone.

No matter what, I don't think the police had any choice here. The article states they were caught by loss prevention (store security). If you are a cop, and get called to a store to arrest someone the store caught shoplifting, are you supposed to get the store and release the shoplifter? I'm sure the store would love that.

Got to ask at a time like this. . . . how would Nick Saban and Urban Meyer handle this? They have teams in the P5 so they must be doing something right.
