The inexcusable crime in all of this, hopefully explored and addressed at time of sentencing, is that the kid's parents apparently were swiping the old husky logo merchandise...

The most important questions in all of this are why does this guy have so many fcking keys and are any of them to a power conference?

"According to a UConn arrest log, Basilica, along with his wife, were detained by Loss Prevention personnel after he allegedly left the store without paying for a total of $81.93 worth in items.

The report said that Basilica left with a key chain valued at $6.99, a pair of socks priced at $4.99, a plastic cup worth $10.99, two key chains valued at $4.99 and two T-shirts, one worth $23.99 and the other $24.99".

Makes you wonder just how much stuff he has stolen from the city of New London as fire chief. It’s pretty easy to make equipment disappear in these departments. I'm sure his union will give him protection for his racket.

The inexcusable crime in all of this is the campus police made an arrest. There are other way to handle this stuff. It's like the campus police just love to arrest folks. They are going out of their way to give the university a black eye.

The worse example was arresting Rashad Anderson for jumping out of the bushes with a rubber knife. But they constantly make arrests when they are better way to handle this stuff. Just freakin' amazing.

Did you even read the article?

He's not the Chief of the Department.

The rashad incident is one thing, but are you suggesting police selectively choose who to arrest for sixth degree larceny, or just not arrest anyone at all for it?

Anyone this old, caught with this many items needs to be prosecuted.

What is the alternative?!? Take him aside and whisper "shame on you" and let them go so that nobody will hear it and he won't get embarrassed? I agree the UConn cops can be a little overbearing at times, but this isn't a 12 year old kid. An older couple who purposely steal from a store should be punished as any other person would. I am not in law enforcement, but I believe the standard process in dealing with theft is an arrest.

It says he's currently on worker's comp. I hate to jump to conclusions, but it makes me wonder what his "injury" is, how long he's been on it, and whether being head of the union helped him with his claim. Like I said I hate to jump to conclusions b/c for all I know he got hurt pulling kids out of a burning building, but the cynic in me thinks that's probably not the case.

This is probably just a miss understanding, I can see them mistaking the Shoppe just outside
the Co-Op as being part of the CO-OP.

The seating is so close to the large doorway, that I can see them wanting to sit down for a minute while shopping.
I almost did the same thing my first time there.

No just treat him like a Cuse hoop star.

Demand payment in full plus a fine & ban them from the store for 10 years.

The night before Rashad was arrested for jumping out of the trees with a "knife" and scaring that girl, he did the same thing to me as I was walking back to South Campus around 11 pm. I just want to say that having a 6'5" 220 lbs. male running at you in the middle of the night, dressed in all black with a mask on, holding what looks like a 12" butcher knife above his head gets your defensive juices flowing. I only realized at the last second that it must be a joke because we were on the South Campus lawn and there were a few other people walking around the area.

The guy is lucky he didn't get shot by someone, because I could definitely see someone pulling a gun thinking the guy was going to kill them. The fact that he did it to a girl, at night, and jumped out of the bushes... well, he was an idiot for continuing to pull that stunt, and, frankly, he deserved to be arrested.

Can you possibly be as dumb as you sound here? The police are the ones giving the black eye and not the shoplifters?
With everything going on and what our school has just recently been through you think covering anything up is the way to go?

One can only pray you have no offspring or you let the one that dumped you raise them.........

City worker stealing from the state. He should be a politician. Someone on this board claimed Rocco was a good guy. Maybe good guy not someone I would leave by my unattended wallet.

How about we delete this thread? Kid just finished high school.

Gimme your bike!

Then you two must have stayed in uppity areas the whole time. I have a cousin who was robbed and I am just about positive some kids wanted to steal my bike.

All police everywhere use judgement every day.

I'm suggesting the campus police use poor judgement.

(Exhibit B; UConn LB, Mike Osiecki, 18, was arrested on April 5 after allegedly taking a candy bar from a display in the UConn Co-Op and walking out without paying.)
