Tre is genuinely very close to his mom. I wish him the best. How is this any different than if the UMass coach was dating his guidance counselor? LOL, having just said that, Marcus Camby just welcomed him aboard.
Is there some NCAA rule that makes this sequence necessary? UMass hiring his coach and then Tre committing rather than the player committing first and then the coach being hired?

Too be fair on two fronts:

Coach: Tre's mom is pretty hot so that makes sense. Pulling recruits with you to your new job is also smart seeing you know how to motivate them to succeed.

Tre: Two other players from Woodstock signed with UMass before he did...playing with people you know is a big deal. UMass also has a Putnam guy inbound so 4 players from CT...gives Tre some connection to home. Not to mention the coach going. For once, the kid did what made sense and didn't follow the bags of cash.

Usually when a top 100 recruit chooses to play with friends, those friends aren't unranked fringe D1 players

I mean, not technically*. But it's the same thing, maybe even more so. You are paying cash to the coach (and often it's the handlers who benefit by steering their kid). Coach's also getting the additional prestige and career advancement out of the deal. Everything has monetary value EOD.

*though we actually don't even know this

They didn’t care when Pastnor hired Mr Lawson.

Good for Tre and UMass. Maybe they win the league and make the NCAAs.
