I put this together back in December - but never posted it. Below are track times pulled from athletic.net for past, current and prospective football players. One big caveat here is that most of the time kids do run their best times as seniors, particularly in spring of their senior years, so to the extent some of these times look slow, keep in mind that some of these are times as a junior and they might not have participated in track as a senior. For most of the guys I just listed their best time.

So who did I miss? I am sure there are many good ones to add.

Note: Updated 12/15

Elijah Jefferies is a prospect I have high hopes for. 6' 4" WR. I love his high school highlights. He was a QB so you have to use your imagination, but he looks like a heck of an athlete to me. Hudl has his 40 time at 4.45.

Awesome thread.

Couple guys that stand out right away.

Tyvon Branch - holds these Section 3 (whatever that is) records in NY and was 100m and 200m state champ his senior year in 2004:
60m - 6.82
100m - 10.60
200m - 21.69

Trevardo Williams
100m - 10.84

Jordan Todman
100m - 11.17

At the 2007 New England Outdoor Championships, Trevardo and Todman competed in the finals of the 100m. Trevardo ran a 10.94 compared to Todman's 11.17. Trevardo was a Jr and Todman a Sr. I don't think Trevardo ran track his senior year but he's got that blazing Jamaican speed!

One encouraging thing about Matt King is that he holds a level 1 USATF certification. I hope that means he will be working to improve sprint technique and doing true speed work (full recoveries) as opposed to repeat "sprints" all the time.

As a former 100M guy who used to get his butt beat, the difference from 11.0 to 11.5 versus 11.5 to 11.9 is night and day. Under 11.00 is entering super fast. However, there is also a subtlety in speed. The real number to look at I think for most football positions is the first 40. The very fast (not super fast) have a fifth gear that kicks in after the first 40 and take over. The elite fast blow your doors off in the first 20M

Terry Caulley ran a (Lusby Maryland High School) school-record 10.5 in the 100 meters as a junior.

Jason Williams ran a 6.52 55-meters (he may have some faster times in the 55-meters in Big East meets.).

So 11.2 appears to be the Mendoza line for D1 recruits with anything below 11.0 is something worth notice.

Yeah all that is good stuff. Also, track is track and football has pads, acceleration, lateral movement, vision and cut ability - none of which play a role in track. Still - track times do tell us something.

100% correct. Football speed and track speed are very different other than running post routes or covering kicks, assuming you can get off the line.

Don’t leave out Marcus Campbell. He and Williams both ran sub 11s, and both played DE.

Thanks for the heads up and great memory. Campbell with a blazing 10.96 100m as a senior in 2007. And 22.65 200m.

Compare that 100m time to some of the skill players that Exit 4 listed at the top and you have to scratch your head a little. Obviously Campbell didn't have a huge impact on the team, and there are so many variables outside of speed alone, but this does reinforce what we already know - that our team speed is lacking.

Where did you get the times for Coyle and Dixon? They are a tad slow. Where these times taken in full football dress. I do know some of the football practice times were taken wearing ankle weights. Coyles best time as a track athlete was around 10.5, Dixon's was 10.48 IIRC.

Athletic.net. Maybe I didn’t pull their best times by mistake.
