Top 40 CBB Coaches in History

Bill has been around the block, end of his career. Also, not sure if Navery was right that this is from 2023. That would explain a lot.
The all time list is old, the one I’m talking about is current. I guess navigating the playing time of a guy being compared to Kobe Bryant is a challenge but I’m not sure it makes Self much of a COTY contender

COTY, unless KU goes on an almighty run, shouldn't be a candidate. Right now, Hoiberg feels like a slam dunk.

That is the worst list ever compiled. The fact that Dan is not there and a bunch of coaches who dont even have one title are there, makes this a bogus list.

Titles are obviously the main goal but some guys can be all-time great coaches without any titles. I think Bo Ryan is an example. He's not top 5 or anything but he's a great, historical coach. Honestly, so is Few but he can use a chip to get him over the hump.

If we're talking top 40, that's a lot of coaches - every coach on a top 40 list doesn't need a title.

Yeah, Hurley is a glaring omission. Only one reason for it, probably because he rubs some people the wrong way. Not me, he's fiery and a winner, Dan isn't in Knight's league when it comes to that type of thing. Hell Knight is in a league of his own in that regard. That's the only explanation, and it's a BS one at that.

Again, I would clearly have him on that list, (behind Jay of course, lol. J/K sorta) Hurley's omission pretty much invalidates that entire list.

.-.

Yep, Bo Ryan and Mark Few are legit despite never winning a national championship but what is Mike Montgomery doing on there? I forgot he even existed. How is he on any list over Rollie Massimino?

What if you changed the question to Program Builder? No way JC is anywhere but #2 to Wooden given what he started with.

Yeah, I joke about Phil Woolpert, who I learned existed five minutes ago, but he won back to back titles a million years ago. Mike Montgomery, come on now
I agree. Did I miss Lou Carnaseca on the list along with back to back NC winner Ed Jucker of Cincinnati?

Respect for JC (#5), disrespect for Dan (unranked). It's not as if this omits current coaches; multiple are listed. How can you leave off a 2-time champ who took a team from the doldrums to the top of college basketball? Preaching to the choir, of course.

Who the frick is "Random SEC??"

I agree, he's not a top 40 coach.

BUT ... he did have Stanford tops in the country for awhile, which they clearly haven't been close since.

I honestly don’t think it’s implausible that the entire point of posting this list was to generate engagement based on excluding Dan Hurley.

Before anyone gets upset, the reason why Dan Hurley isn't on here is it's a list from February 2023 before he had any championships. Why a random SEC Twitter account decided to post it this week is bizarre

Fair. Then disregard my prior comment.

I’ll die on the hill that Roy Williams was only considered a great cbb coach because he was so bad at getting guys ready for the league, he’d have a team of former top 25 junior and seniors every single time he won a championship.

If he was actually good at developing talent they wouldn’t have stayed long enough for him to win anything.

Calhoun >>>> Roy
How does this kind of talent manage to stay with you for 3-4 years???

3 upperclassmen who were top 10 recruits on both national champion squads is insane.

4 in the top 15 who were upperclassmen.

Throw in a top 10 freshman on both squads.

No coach more overrated than Roy.
