I'm guessing the author might have been on the west coast. What are there like 29 college athletic teams so following just a few of them like I do I wouldn't be a good voice on this topic but it is good to see a couple of my favorites on the list.

I don't know about him being on the west coast.

I think that UCLA and Stanford are largely justly in the discussion. The thing about the (current) PAC schools - and I noticed this in a lesser way here at Arizona - is that they are good in an awful lot of sports, some would be considered a bit niche I suppose, but Water Polo is an NCAA sport. They might or might not have a Natty, but they are top 50 fairly consistently, often top 25. For example, I think this was a very good year for tennis, golf and track and field teams here at Arizona. Baseball made the tourney. Both basketball teams, of course. Some other sports are rebuilding. And I think we are the weakest of the 4 PAC programs mentioned.

I know that UConn and Texas are good in a lot of sports, off hand. Truthfully, Notre Dame as well.

The bottom line is that I can't point at the list and argue it is unreasonable, but I doubt it is the only list with that title that could be put together.

Impressive that Uconn makes this list as the other schools are larger and have more of a tradition in sports at a national level. The NCAA 'sanction sports': (Numbers are: Number of schools participating, Number of scholarships allowed (women's basketballm is incorrect as 15 is the limit) And not sure which sports allow 'split/partial' scholarships.

The head count sports are Basketball (men and women), football (FBS), Women's Tennis, Women's Gymnastics and Women's Volleyball. All other sports allow split scholarships.

Your list is incomplete, Fencing, Rifle and Skiing are all NCAA sports where a coed championship is awarded. In addition to omitting Gymnastics, I don't see Beach Volleyball or Ice Hockey. Track and Field is also divided between indoor and outdoor championships.

In all 90 championships are offered across 3 divisions.

Here's an interesting article on overall NCAA/athletic dept revenues - UConn is #50, which is right around the bottom of the Big 10 and Big 12, and bottom third of Pac-12. And that's without our football contributing at the levels of most other Power 5 colleges' football teams. Notably some schools are not listed that may actually push UConn's ranking down, including Stanford, Duke, Northwestern, Syracuse and Boston College.
