From John Silvers:
Sunday Wrap- up
Just off the phone with Paul Pasqualoni and his Sunday call. It’s kind of a review/look ahead, and I think it’s always good to get out of the heat of the moment.
I know the offense is a big topic, and as far as being conservative and playing “Katie bar the door” offense, UConn is guilty as charged. The Huskies didn’t feel like Buffalo could score on them, and, they didn’t do anything offensively to maybe give away a score. We will get to thosee two plays later, but here is Pasqualoni on the play-calling.
“We had excellent field position. We didn’t get a lot on the last five drives of the game. We didn’t get any points out of there. That’s a product of not taking any chances. We had field position and felt we could maintain that field position…I wish we could have executed a little better and made a couple of first downs. We played more field position and played more conservative those last few drives.
The concerning part for me is a defense that has still seen a penchant of big play breakdowns. The hook and lateral — it’s a trick play — went for 50 yards. Pasqualoni said on the play that some defenders thought Munrie was down and then Blidi Wreh-Wilson kind of knocked Byron Jones off the tackle. On the 43-yard pass play that set up the FG, it was just a beaten corner on the play. That’s concerning to me. UConn gave up 361 yards of offense, and 93 of it on those two plays. There was also that fourth down screen pass that went for a big play in the first half.
Pasqualoni also mentioned that Angelo Pruitt played very well. They were happy with his performance. the key now is getting E.J. Norris up to speed. Norris has speed and athleticism, but is still raw as a true freshman.
Speaking of true freshmen, redshirts for players could be coming soon definitively. I know a player such as Jordan Floyd, who is on the two-deep, hasn’t played this year. He’s dressed, but hasn’t played. Same with Mykal Myers, who I don’t believe has appeared in a game.
Lastly, on the passing game. Chandler Whitmer is completing 61 percent of his passes, has over 1000 yards passing and has four games over 200 yards. That’s a lot more than the QB position has produced in years. Last year, Johnny McEntee hovered around 50 percent. Also, it’s not just the completions, on Saturday Whitmer was at 10.3 yards per attempt at 15.6 yards per completion. That’s downfield and vertical passing.
That’s it for Sunday.
Gotta pay the bills.
