From John Silvers:

Sunday Wrap- up

Just off the phone with Paul Pasqualoni and his Sunday call. It’s kind of a review/look ahead, and I think it’s always good to get out of the heat of the moment.

I know the offense is a big topic, and as far as being conservative and playing “Katie bar the door” offense, UConn is guilty as charged. The Huskies didn’t feel like Buffalo could score on them, and, they didn’t do anything offensively to maybe give away a score. We will get to thosee two plays later, but here is Pasqualoni on the play-calling.

“We had excellent field position. We didn’t get a lot on the last five drives of the game. We didn’t get any points out of there. That’s a product of not taking any chances. We had field position and felt we could maintain that field position…I wish we could have executed a little better and made a couple of first downs. We played more field position and played more conservative those last few drives.

The concerning part for me is a defense that has still seen a penchant of big play breakdowns. The hook and lateral — it’s a trick play — went for 50 yards. Pasqualoni said on the play that some defenders thought Munrie was down and then Blidi Wreh-Wilson kind of knocked Byron Jones off the tackle. On the 43-yard pass play that set up the FG, it was just a beaten corner on the play. That’s concerning to me. UConn gave up 361 yards of offense, and 93 of it on those two plays. There was also that fourth down screen pass that went for a big play in the first half.

Pasqualoni also mentioned that Angelo Pruitt played very well. They were happy with his performance. the key now is getting E.J. Norris up to speed. Norris has speed and athleticism, but is still raw as a true freshman.

Speaking of true freshmen, redshirts for players could be coming soon definitively. I know a player such as Jordan Floyd, who is on the two-deep, hasn’t played this year. He’s dressed, but hasn’t played. Same with Mykal Myers, who I don’t believe has appeared in a game.

Lastly, on the passing game. Chandler Whitmer is completing 61 percent of his passes, has over 1000 yards passing and has four games over 200 yards. That’s a lot more than the QB position has produced in years. Last year, Johnny McEntee hovered around 50 percent. Also, it’s not just the completions, on Saturday Whitmer was at 10.3 yards per attempt at 15.6 yards per completion. That’s downfield and vertical passing.

That’s it for Sunday.

Gotta pay the bills.

+1000

While everyone wants to focus on the offense and the fact that they let off the gas at the end of the game......don't forget we have a defense that is supposed to be top in the country (and statistically is)

However

There were AT LEAST 6 plays that should have gone for big yards and didn't because either the QB missed a wide open receiver or the WR couldn't haul in the ball....that is going to be a problem

24 points is plenty to win the game, I agree with PP's decision to run the ball and milk the clock down to win the game.....the defense stunk up the field yesterday

Still giving up big plays.....still can't cover underneath

The blitzes are fun to watch, however, blitzing everyone and then giving up a 30 yard completion on a screen because everyone went after the QB is not ok

Everyone wants to get after the offense because we only scored 24 instead of 500.....but don't forget our defense let up more yards than we got and should have let up maybe twice as much

Now we're criticizing the defense - the same defense that has saved our ass at the end of the game twice this season - for things that could have happened and are "going to be" a problem.

The defensive issues pale in comparison to offense's. Not even remotely close. Who do you think could get another job easier at the end of the season, Don Brown or George DeLeone?

UConn's defense is good, but not anywhere good enough to win games with lousy offensive production. Even 20 game winners in MLB need help from the offense.

24 points is lousy offensive production?...jesus

And yes the defense has saved our ass the first couple games.......but the past two games they've lost it for us, if you can't see that then you are blinded by the want to burn Deleone instead of actually watching the game

Yes, it's hard to believe but in 2012 at home against Buffalo you should be ashamed by 24 points against Buffalo when you get the ball in great field position. When Morgan State can score 34 on a team, it's probably not the right idea to go into the fetal position with a lead forcing you to recover an onside kick to hold on.

Buffalo has played four games - Georgia, Kent State, Morgan State and UConn. Guess which offense had the fewest yards against the Bulls.... I'll give you four guesses.

i think not having Joseph and Jennings has really set our defense back. With the defense we play a half second and a little push is the difference between a negative yardage play and a big gainer. The units all need to step up a little more now.

Shocked the all-knowing football gods on this board have not focused more on this point. Their absence has changed the defense dramatically! The consistent push and pressure from the Dline in the first few games is now gone with these injuries and the d'backs need to step up and play smart moving forward. Grazt got smoked on several plays and after the first, gets up shaking his finger at the Buffalo bench right in front of my seats. He's got to put that crap away and look make a play or knock someone out of the game with a hit. As we all said in the beginning of the season: we will live or die this year based on the play of our defense on the field. Time to step up boys!

I totally agree. He doesn't play well or hard enough to justify that attitude.
