Well the excuse I've seen thrown around is "it's just college hockey"

From another thread:

http://www.uconnhuskies.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/110514aab.html

>> The capacity for UConn hockey games at the XL Center is 5,618, which consists of the lower level of the facility. This capacity was identified to create the best collegiate hockey atmosphere possible. The demand for tonight’s particular game resulted in UConn making about 2,000 more seats available – mostly in the upper level corners and behind the goal areas.<<

I'd rather see them packed in low and loud than scattered throughout the building. Just me.

But it won't make sense if there's no walk-ups for the rest of the upper bowl. It'll look dumb.

Hope they open up another walk-up section. I bet the walk-up crowd will be huge tonight.

For UCONN's first Hockey East home game, that's a fantastic attendance #. Impressive!
