Good hire by Houston. If only UConn didn't hire PP and hired a hot shot OC as head coach instead and kept Orlando as DC....

Maybe our guys will show me something after some time setting up their preferred defensive style, but I would have loved to get Orlando back in the house. Damn it all to hell...

I was a big proponent of hiring Herman last year here. And now they get one of the most underrated guys on the Edsall staffs to come in and run the defense. Look out for the Cougs.

This makes me sad :(

Looks like Houston can be contending for an AAC title next year.

I don't get this Herman thing.

He's a TEXAS guy. Texas State ... and then Houston made sense. Just like good ol' what's his name's Todd Graham's limited stay at Pitt, the HOME turf means something in recruiting. Ohio State can have divergence ... because they are going to have ample geo coverage along the staff. But, at UConn, we need guys that know where we need to get kids. That is PA & NJ. Some NE & Quebec frankly. Florida bigtime. But, I don't think we are ever going to get 5 kids form Texas.

Same with Chad Morris.

So ... a Narduzzi or a Diaco has the profile (leaving aside the Level discussion ... geezum). I also will argue til I am blue: Whipple is not really going to prove a high level ever. Just my view o recruiting.

He's clearly got a plan in putting together his staff. He's even hired a top notch Houston High School Football coach. Looking to lock down the Metroplex

Confirm Westfield High School coach Corby Meekins joining new Houston coach Tom Herman for TEs. One of Houston area's top coaches. http://www.si.com/college-football/2015/01/06/corby-meekings-houston-cougars-tom-herman

How is it Houston can hire good coordinators and we get Cummings and the Dynamic Duo?

That is the small time thinking that will sink this program.

Here is a hint for the UCONN football graduate assistants, paper shufflers, coaches and others that read this website:

I don't think hiring Diaco, a Broyles award winner, was small time thinking. That he was northeast/jersey guy was an added bonus. Hiring PGDL because they were northeast guys was small time thinking. I wanted an offensive centric HC but it is what it is. Hope he gets better.

I didn't say hiring Diaco was small minded thinking. Discounting Herman, because he's a "Texas guy" (whatever that means) is.

Why do I have such an issue with the throwing around the Broyles Award winner...I have issues I suppose.

Or maybe its because it doesnt guarentee anything except that they won an award at a school that recruits top 10-20 nationally every year.

I am more interested in the HC of year award at MAC or other conferences than I am for a guy who worked for someone elese and received an award.

The risk taken with hiring Diaco, was a risk that is part of football. It's natural. Does the co-ordinator make the step up in grade to the head coach? There is no doubt that Diaco was a good defensive co-ordinator and position coach. You are what your record says you are.

Winning the Broyle Award - all that does, is validate the fact that a person is a pretty good co-ordinator when it comes to preparing one aspect of the 3 phases of the game.

I was less than impressed with Diaco's ability to prepare a team in all 3 phases of the game in game preparations, and planning and game time performance and decision making, but it was year 1. We'll see what year 2 brings. Whether what happened in 2014 was a purposely designed thing that happened that was known would lead to very little chance of winning, or what happened was actually the best effort to game plan and perform with the goal to win, week to week - is irrelevant now.

Because either way, we need to show improvement to the point where we are showing up week to week, and putting forward performances that indicates a well prepared team with an effective game plan.

I didn't believe in 2014, that we did not have the talent on the field to compete with anyone on our schedule, and I do not believe that to be the case in 2015 either. We've had a clusterf**k of 24 games in the past 2 seasons though. Holy hell. It will be nice to see a team show up in September, that is physically and mentally prepared, well coached, and can plant Villanova and Army for a 2-0 start, and then see where things go from there positively.

I agree with most of what Spackler said except for the QB position. I don't think they've had a legit AAC(never mind Power -5 conference) championship caliber QB in the last 4 years.
