Isn’t Tilda a foreign player (Swedish)? I was under the impression that non US college students could not earn $$ (NIL or otherwise) due to Visa limitations.

That changed a while ago from what I've heard through Canadian families with kids playing in D1.

There’s a catch. Foreign born players can’t earn “active” income, i.e. shooting a commercial. That requires a green card. However they can earn “passive” income from things like jersey sales, which Nika cleaned up on when she was at UConn.

They're getting more than just the revenue from jersey sales now. International athletes are getting paid in a similar manner without impacting their visa status.

The current structure of college sports is unsustainable without action from U.S. lawmakers that establish uniform rules, guardrails, and penalties. I hope fans of the game realize that the NIL $$ figures thrown around are just the tip of the iceberg in today’s NIL contracts. I do know of players who have included in their NIL contracts transportation for their parents to and from games, apartments (0r hotels) for them to stay in while attending, their meals, and even their ability to watch practices. This is just an example of endless possibilities that can be added to an athlete’s NIL agreement with a school. It’s the wild wild west in NIL world, and if estimates are accurate LSU’s football roster for the coming season is worth somewhere in the 40 million $ range. Just crazy times. JMO

The Div I sports landscape now that the NCAA let the genie out of the bag will get worse before something is done. It takes a crisis before there is any corrective action. The schools with the largest resources including alumni - no need to list them - will become where all players will want to go and the rest get the leftovers. *

*(Except of course UConn which happily so far due to 1) its amazingly long-lasting HOF coach, 2) ithe program's success in taking teams to the FF and winning championships and 3) the track record of getting players into the W so far has very effectively bucked the trend. Take away any one or more of those however and for a future rookie or transfer prospect looking at where to trade her talent for 1,2 or more years along with some $ and that's when things may have to change. With all due respect, we don’t know if UConn lost out to TCU on Somfai. The deal was obviously cut before the portal even opened, and it’s apparent that Somfai never even visited TCU before announcing she was going there. So it was likely done by an agent, who technically contacted TCU illegally looking for a deal before the portal was opened. If that agent also contacted Geno, I’m pretty sure Geno wasn’t going to put the program at risk.

Are there tampering issues involved if the player-athlete initiated the contact? Wouldn't the "plans to enter the portal" that were posted before April 6th also qualify for the same risks?

The NCAA strictly prohibits coaches from contacting players on other teams before the portal officially opens, regardless of who initiates the contact. It is considered to be tampering and is a violation of NCAA transfer rules.

Date of Birth: 12/07/2004. Emma is well known in FIBA competition (google
Emma Cechova FIBA women's basketball for stats and "HONORS"). Emma
has long arms (my view) and speed (rather fit, but needs bulk?), she defends the rim and had an excellent game against TALLER, but slower, Chinese players. More a Post
player than a SF, she may remind you of Olivia Nelson-Ododa. While she is older than other
player options, the FIBA webpage describes her as needing some seasoning/
experience to fully develop her talent and skillset. COME TO STORRS!

This player has been on my mind for several days now. But at her advanced age (ha!), I don't see why she would want to play college ball in the US. And if she did come, I can't see her staying beyond two years. I guess I would take her anyway, but would Geno?

All that said, if there were another foreign national flying under radar, say 6-3 and skilled, I'd be more than happy to consider her.

I just noted in another post about my disappointment and surprise here, since the expectations were that Lara would select between her other two initial preferences, UConn and Duke. TCU? Has to be the $$.

In addition to $$$, TCU now has a pretty good sales pitch:

• Every year we recruit a star guard and star post. VanLith/Prince, Miles/Suarez, Grant/Somfai.
• You will get 30min/game, be the bulk of our offense and contend for Big12 awards.

I don't know about Tilda, but as far as money is concerned, get used to it. NIL and the portal have killed the sport. Going forward no kid is going to bypass a lot of money to play for a contender when they can get a lot of money and play for a contender. You wanna be a contender? Guess what you have to do.

The amount of money we're talking about is ridiculous. If a player asks for and gets $700K, consider that just a couple of years ago that would be 10x of a good WNBA salary.

I would be very surprised that UCONN is ahead of these schools when you factor in what teams might pay to get players. You're counting recruiting expenses to see a player. But paying money to put money in their pocket, I would think UCONN is laggard. They make up for it to a degree because they're popular enough for outside activities. For example, I look at SoCal- just a wild guess and that's all it is-- I would guess they've payed a lot to get some of their players. I'm wrong with all of this?

Yes, especially when you consider NIL. Connecticut is a huge brand and it's women's basketball players have a high visibility platform.

Sort of, although at that point, they just morph into endorsements. I think the real way of looking at this is that the WNBA's three month salary isn't all that material a number for someone who has very high NIL endorsements in college.

NIL has become synonymous with 'college money', but it's actually the abbreviation of a Name, Image and Likeness agreement, which is the same contract used for pro endorsements/sponsorship deals.

A lawyer can be an expert in writing up leases, wills, trusts, mergers, divorces, NILs, employment contracts etc.
