Tiff leave behind a lot of fans and a record to be proud of. She was part of 2 national championship teams, 4 Final Four teams, and 4 Big East tournament championship teams. She played every game of the 90-game winning streak and was the key in winning some of them. She also had a concussion, a stress fracture, and countless aches, pains, and bruises from hitting the floor hundreds of time.

Some personal stats: Tiff finished tied for second in games played (154), fourth in minutes (4,381), 10th in points (1,801), eighth in 3-pointers (186), second in free throw made (431), ninth in assists (483), and 12th in steals in UConn history. A very nice all-around performance.

An outstanding career.
She stepped up admirably when Caroline went down in 2009, kept UConn in the Sweet 16 game against Cal until the rest of the team came alive, and willingly and unselfishly allowed Harltey and KML to rise and shine in what should have been her All American season. A lesser person might have crumbled under the weight of all the expectations and criticisms. Tiffany Hayes persevered. Never has a UConn player accomplished so much without receiving commensurate praise.
Although a team accomplishment, reaching 154 games played is a specatacular accomplishment.
To make 431 free throws in four years as a guard means that she was attacking the basket.

As stated, a very nice all-around performance.

If Tiff had not played in the shadow of some greats like Tina, Maya and Renee, we might appreciate her stats more. Although, actually, those are pretty awesome stats to have after playing in the shadow of those three! Kind of like all your sibs make Summa Cum Laude, you make Magna Cum Laude. She does have 4 Final Fours and 2 NC rings! Not shabby at all, IMO! I, for one, will miss her, her effort, her smile, and her love for her teammates very much.

The stat that stands out, at least to me, is that she is second in free throws made. When you think of how many times Tina Charles was fouled, or how often players like Maya Moore and Diana Taurasi were the focus of the offense, or how many All-Americans and legends UConn has produced, that Tiffany is second in that category is really quite astounding.

Would you prefer Prahalis or Hayes being selected by Phoenix with the 6th pick? Or someone else who might fall that far?

Getting to the free throw line was definitely the thing that set Tiff apart as a UConn player. The only players to attempt more free throws than Tiff look like Tina Charles, Swin Cash, Shea Ralph, and Rebecca Lobo with Barbara Turner and Svetlana Abrosimova attempting with less attempts, but in the same area. The few UConn players that are consistently good at getting to the line stand out.

Tiff had 77 more FTA than Maya and a 171 more FTA than Taurasi.

Shea Ralph made 42 more free throws than Tiff in over 1200 less minutes than Tiff played. Tiff came within two made free throws of breaking Shea single season record this season, but I'm kind of glad she fell just short because Shea set her single season record in only 30 games as a sophomore.

Honestly, we need a point guard (traded Temeka Johnson) and a wing/forward (Penny Taylor tore her ACL), plus our usual need (center/post depth). Might as well go for the best available player remaining, irrespective of position.

Who would that be for you? Knowing Nneka will be gone as well as the likes of Stricklen and the Johnsons.

When you step back and look at her final statistics, Tiff had a great career at UConn. Sadly, she was often maligned on this board, and frankly, at time she deserved some flak. But Tiff brought intensity to the floor EVERY game. A warrior, nothing less.
BTW, some players come to be appreciated more when viewed through the lens of time. I wasn't a huge Ann Strothers fan when she played, but there was an article the other day that mentioned her accomplishments at UConn, and they were very impressive. Sometimes we (or I, at least), can't see the forest for the trees.

Since the WNBA post was about Hayes, I think it is most certainly on-topic.

Cam, nothing in the OP or title of OP about WNBA, Just sayin'.

And if HuskyNan thinks the thread evolving into discussing Hayes in the WNBA is off-topic, I am sure she will handle it.

Threads always devolve and seldom put back on track, it is the way of the yard.

Ice is right, our threads tend to meander all over the place - it's a Boneyard hallmark. The only thread I felt needed to be kept on track was the one meant to congratulate Nneka on a great career, which had a specific purpose. This thread is fine.
