Thoughts on SC vs UCLA?

This is without a doubt the worst game I’ve ever seen South Carolina play.

Not saying playing our A game makes up 33 points, but certainly might’ve made this one watchable
Dawn wanted to beat UConn more than win the NC, so she sacrificed her players endurance and stamina face guarding Azzi and Sarah and they had nothing left for UCLA.

I checked the final score, and smiled. Then I checked the box score for the number of fouls called on each team and grinned. Turns out SC isn't quite as good in an evenly called game. ☺️
I think S.C. shooting 29% had a lot more to do with how good they were (or weren't in this case).

.-.
I didn't watch the game but just from the score and the box score, the Bruins certainly did their best to avenge last season's loss in the Final Four and took it out on the Gamecocks.

UCLA seniors scored every point. South Carolina might be back in the Championship Game next year, but UCLA definitely won't be. But they'll always have this one magical season.
Definitely a magical season for them. The seniors move on and UCLA rebuilds. I wouldn't be surprised if Close retired.

Well at least the Big 10 can claim a WBB championship. First since 1999. Although it comes with an asterisk ✳️
Yeah, some folks are saying we have a B1G team in both the women's and men's final but it rings different for me than if it was a "traditional" B1G team. I'm a Michigan fan/alum and I'm still getting used to Maryland and Rutgers in the B1G and it's been well over ten years. 😀

I don’t have any connection to this UCLA team but watching Holly’s interviews with Cori Close and Jaquez made me tear up

Obviously I’m mad UConn isn’t raising the trophy right now. But I’m really happy for this team
If UConn wasn’t going to win it all, I was fine with either UCLA or Texas. Surprised it was such a beatdown, but we’ve seen it before that when teams beat UConn in the FF they usually struggle in the title game.

I'm sure Coach Staley would take a NC over a win against UConn (as hard as they are to come by). She didn't sacrifice her players' endurance and stamina. She did what it took to win the game. So what was she supposed to do, hold back and risk losing the UConn game? You play to win the game.

I doubt there will ever be another team with six seniors, let alone one where all are drafted. No one was going to beat them; the oddsmakers had a really bad night.

Tell me again what the foul differential was for the third quarter?
You don't think that influenced what the score would have been?
Your post said that the outcome of the game was determined (by the refs) in the 3rd quarter. All I'm saying is whatever the foul differential was in the 3rd quarter, at 44-39 the game wasn't over.

Please notify ESPN, the graphic they showed said Purdue won it in 1998 😑

South Carolina is checked out, but UCLA is the team running up and down the court getting easy buckets. The lack of quickness/athletic ability narrative I was seeing has proven to be bupkis.
Oh I still think that narrative may be true, but UCLA came out determined to make it a non issue against both TX and SC!

Great job UCLA! Nice for all the seniors and Coach Close.

Really crazy just how bad that game went for SC. Shooting 18 for 62. When they did get something going on defense, they missed the shot. When they had 4 players underneath for a rebound, the shot clanked hard off the rim to UCLA on perimeter. Credit UCLA as they played well, but SC was not their usual self.

17 fouls each team, so refs not an issue.

I had game forecasted wrong, but not unhappy. UCLA earned title convincingly.

Maybe someone else can explain it to you.

I once or twice referred to Close as the McCallie of Westwood. I'll have to retire that phrase. I can't say I was happy that they won, as I was thinking the Chickens would be financing a new pair of Nikes ... But alas .. the better team won. In retrospect perhaps UCLA deserved the overall #1 seed after all.

Congrats to UCLA. A well-earned title. Aside from their great rebounding, the one accomplishment I'd like UCONN to emulate in the future is having 6 players comfortable in stepping up and scoring the ball as opposed to over-emphasising just a couple of stars.
One other observation: IMO Makeer, not Edwards, will be SC's major star next season.

Congratulations to the UCLA team on a phenomenal game and great success to the seniors as many of them get drafted in the W!

Congratulations to SCar for a great season. They will be back next year ready to fight again.
I thought the addition of the 6'7" player was going to make SC a shoo-in for the NC. Dawn was acting as if she had just insured SC the NC.

I can now publicly say that I had UCLA winning it all on my main bracket...

As much as I wanted us to win, it just wasn't meant to be. Knocking off this "historic" UConn team will always be a great memory but I would rather be hoisting the trophy. If it couldn't be the Gamecocks, I'm glad it was UCLA.

Congrats to UCLA!

If you don’t like South Carolina, there’s plenty you can draw from today for your post without making this up lol
