Agree, but we wouldn’t have been in that position with better substitutions under 8 in the second half. Polley was struggling on both ends all game and Hurley rode with him (no blame on him he’s been great the last few before tonight). Sanogo was nowhere to be seen after taking the game over on O and giving a great effort on DCan't blame free throw misses on coaching.
He had a sequence where he had a 1 on 1 with Champagnie and got a block/stop, left hand at the shot clock, directed traffic....assist to whaley on an open jumper, defensive rebound to Cole for a layup. This in a 3 minute span, gets pulled for the rest of the game.Everyone in America knew that Sanogo should have gone back in at the under-8. We were on a run until he came out. It is absolutely inexcusable that Hurley did not opt to put him back in. THAT is the reason we lost.
FT misses happen. Missed layups happen. They're kids and make mistakes. We must expect better performance from our coach being paid millions a year.

I really wonder what Hurley is gonna say to Sanogo. The kid must be livid.
Agreed. Sucks to lose the easy ones though, because now we’re staring two straight losses right in the face. Without Bouk we have to win all the gimmes we can get or it’s going to be an uphill battle to be a tournament team once he gets backThe cancellation of the Xavier game is a blessing in disguise. We have the extra time to prepare for a tough payback game at Creighton. After the performance today, the staff and the players need the extra time to get over this one.
When you keep playing the same players who keep missing FT's in the game and keep running the offense through the same.poor FT shooters it's coaching.
Unfortunately Hurley doesn’t have the answers. Brendan Adams plays very poorly and he takes him out and puts in Gaffney who plays even worse. Nothing Hurley can do.Everyone in America knew that Sanogo should have gone back in at the under-8. We were on a run until he came out. Polley did not move well without the ball. He would catch a pass and without an open look, would immediately pass the ball to a teammate. He doesn't have a bad handle. I am surprised when guarded, that he did not try to put it on the floor to beat the defender off the dribble, and try a shot. Recognizing he had a subpar game, Hurley should have played him less.He should have put Sanogo back in under 8 mins. He got spooked by the small ball 3 point shooting. Hurley seems like he will always choose defensive matchups over offense...which would make sense if Polley wasn't getting abused all game. We played better when we went big in this game. The plus/minus must be quite telling. With that said, we still should have won. It wasnt just coaching. Missed FTs have cost us both losses. Missed layups continue. Polley hero ball at the end was bad judgement that should not happen by a senior, especially when he was having a really subpar game. Maybe he thinks that after a couple good shooting game games it falls on him to replace Bouk. It doesnt.
Who would you have gone to? Polley was terrible today. Maybe if you can free him up so his feet are set. Cole and Martin have been awful from the line at end of games. Whaley is a mediocre foul shooter who missed one. Are we going to Adams or Gaffney with the game on the line because they are the best FT shooters?THIS is the biggest problem. Not sure if the plan on the “last” possession was to get the ball inside to Martin from Polley, but if it was (it probably was at least given to Polley as an option) it’s just terrible coaching. Not only has Martin proved he can’t make layups, but he also shoots 60% from the line. Either way, this was a low percentage option in the most critical possession of the game.
While we can blame Martin for missing his FTs, the real blame should be on the staff who unfairly put a poor FT shooter / guy who can’t make layups in position to make a high pressure shot.
Stop being rationalWho would you have gone to? Polley was terrible today. Mayhe if you can free him up so his feet are set. Cole and Martin have been awful from the line at end of games. Sanogo or Whaley, cause the tallest player on St John’s was about 6’5”. Have Martin and Adams crashing the boards for a second chance opportunity.Who would you have gone to? But I thought you said they shouldnt go to a poor foul shooter? Sanogo is a poor foul shooter. Whaley is mediocre and just missed one.Sanogo or Whaley, cause the tallest player on St John’s was about 6’5”. Have Martin and Adams crashing the boards for a second chance opportunity.
