he may be the most improved player we've ever seen next year, this guy could be a game changing monster

I like the progress he's made, and I love his spirit

can midnight madness come fast enough?

how much are donations going to increase? I think the school's in for a windfall

and for the record, I'm looking forward to football season for the 1st time in 3 years (I did give PP one year)

I think Brimah will be better, but due to his injury he will only be able to make limited progress

The shoulder surgery will certainly stunt his development this offseason, and he's likely to only have one month to prepare for the season. With that said I'm really happy he's getting this taken care of now and not two months from now. I just want everyone to be healthy and I think we have a chance to repeat next April. We have a couple open scholarships with Daniels and Tolk gone, and a 5th year senior big would be great. Bank the other scholarship for 2015 and wrap up the number one recruiting class.

Shoulders can be a difficult rehab. I am going to temper my expectations.

I spent most of this past season preaching about how improved Brimah will be next year due to the upcoming summer where he can work on both his game and his body. The recovery period (and lack of opportunity to work on either) will be a setback. The flipside of this is that if AB did make a major leap this summer, the upcoming season easily could have been his last here. This may keep him here an additional year.

Nonsense. He'll be almost back to normal by July and I know from experience. AND its his off shoulder, so he'll have plenty of time to work on things.

I completely agree. He needs to watch a lot of tape, improve footwork, practice his jump hook. There's a lot he can do to improve his basketball skills and IQ. And the surgery will not hinder his ability to do belt squats and fairly soon after the surgery he will be able to do leg press. If the players gym doesn't have a belt squat machine, then someone should be fired immediately. His lower body will be a lot stronger. Obviously his upper body progress will be minimal. Overall I think he can still get at least 2/3 the development he would have had. Maybe something like his jump hook will be better than it would have been if not for the surgery, while his upper body strength and a few other things will be a little less developed.

Congrats on coming back from a labrum surgery after only 2 months, but the recovery time is typically 4-5 months for this type of thing. I'm also assuming you didn't play basketball at an elite program like UConn. There is no question this surgery will hinder his offseason development. I also never said he couldn't do other things to improve since it's his off arm. He should be fine for the season and his ceiling is through the roof. But to say missing several months in the offseason (prime time to improve) is not "nonsense."

The opportunity cost of a big boy camp forgone this summer will be large.

i just hope he doesnt have an omar calhoun type season. But his development is going to be very very limited this offseason

I think it will certainly limit his development offensively, and not being able to attend camps will be a detriment to his entire game, but I think he will still have the opportunity to practice, learn and develop significantly with regard to defense (particularly without fouling) and rebounding, which by in far is what we need him most to improve on.

That's good to hear. I had a roommate who's shoulder never came all the way back. But that was years ago and I assume techniques have improved.

Everyone recovers differently but almost all of my Marines who had this surgery did very well and were able to resume full duties as an infantry Marine (not that far off from being an elite athlete).
Praying for his rapid recovery!
I agree that it will be a good opportunity to improve his core and lower body strength, work on hook shots & footwork in the paint.

Not sure what experience you have but I've had 3 labral tear surgeries and eventually had the entire AC joint removed. The recovery from each surgery was different. Granted, I was trying to rehab so I could play baseball again, not basketball, but there's no guarantee he'll be good to go in July. One of my surgeries took every bit of 6 months to fully recover. Then again, all of my surgeries were for tearing both labrum.

I hope you're 3 month diagnosis is spot on though.

Since he could've opted against surgery, I wonder if that means the damage is relatively minor? If so, does that reduce the recovery time much?

Not really. You can try and rehab less severe labral tears through physical therapy but once you opt for surgery you pretty much guarantee yourself at least a 12-14 week recovery at the minimum. Of course, the amount of repair needed once the doctor's started scoping will certainly play into actual recovery time.

Jesus man, what were you doing with yourself? From throwing a baseball?

There might be a difference in returning to form as an elite athlete and returning to form as a guy surfing on the internet.

(How freaking idiotic is the profanity filter? It changes p o r n to smut. Welcome back to kindergarten.)

Depends which shoulder...and how "active" (ahem) the guy is.

Maybe not. Rapid, repetitive arm movements required for both.

Baseball, then chasing the dream on 4-5 beer league softball teams.

30+ years of excessive masturbation probably didn't help the original injury but worked surprisingly better than rubber bands on a door knob during rehabs.
