Perhaps some of these commits open up recruitment with new coaches coming in. Mingo was brought on by Hubie.

I think our recruiting is fine. Getting transfers w 2 yrs of eligibility is the way to go (like tarris, Silas). And bag a one and doner every year if you can but don’t break the bank for them. Would we have been happy w Darryn Peterson? The best recruiting classes in the country don’t win chips.

The only thing I’d add is some more athleticism and size/strength on the front court and some quickness in the backcourt. All that can be done in the portal.

Totally agree. Money brings in top freshman, like Dybantsa, who to my eye was clearly the best freshman in the country. But BYU ain’t in the final four. And Dybantsa is OAD, so now you have to start all over next year. So, I agree with you Hurley has the system down.

We have definitely seen improvement in recruiting already. Three Burger Boys last year. Silas and Malachi wanting a chance to play at a championship level. Even the use of the portal to bring in end of the bench players like Koroma.

Yes saw that and it was kinda fun with Stephen A and JWill taking shots at each other. While that provided much humor they both agreed on Hurley.

But facts are some kids are not right for our program. Guys like Ross and Furphy are not splash recruits and take time but their finished product speaks or will speak for itself.

It’s still going to be rare to crack the top 10 as the kid and their family has to want this system, Hurley has to agree, and playing time needs to be available and some NIL will be in the picture.

If you check places like 247 or on3 it’s really hard to get a picture of their personality and outlook for playing so it’s like a carnivore seeing prime steaks and wondering why we can’t get one.

Hurley has made it fairly clear he recruits families. AK, Castle, Clingan, Mullins, Stewart, he's getting guys who have parents who want the kids to be pushed, prepared and not coddled or have things handed to them. Not everyone is going to be up for that, but I do think that we are probably a top choice for anyone who is. And those kids will be mostly drama free and potentially play for more than one season.

In the portal era, you have to have experience to go deep in March. I think it's really hard to win relying on multiple 18 year olds, when so many teams now have almost all upperclassmen. Look at Auburn last year, that was a very old team.

I couldn’t agree more. Hurley and his staff wants guys that want to be coached hard, value winning the most, want to be pushed to improve, and see the “big picture” around development and a long NBA career versus maximizing short term NIL dollars. Some recruits fit their profile while others do not, and that’s okay. The right kids make their way here.

Two year transfers have worked well for us. But so have one year senior transfers. Joey California and Cam Spenser were both one year of eligibility transfers that played critical roles in championship years.

One size does not fit all. It really depends on the team and its needs. Coaches need to have flexibility in roster construction. It's a new puzzle every year.

This staff has found the best formula for winning in today’s college basketball landscape imo. They might not always hit on players, but have far more often than not. To win, I feel like you need to have veteran experienced players that are mature grown men. A veteran roster mixed with a bit of youth that develops into the next group of core players. Two to three high school recruits with at most 1 one and done player coming in seems to be the winning formula. When you get the recruiting classes Duke gets they are promised significant minutes. That leads to shallow rosters without great benches. Which leads to collapses in Final Four games versus Houston from starters being gassed. It also leads to freshmen making freshman mistakes like we saw in the last 10 seconds the other night.

In many cases, it is unfortunately true. Kids are groomed by people to be dependent on them for decision making...so those people can ride their coat-tails. Its one of the reasons you see these rushed decisions to declare for the draft for kids who never end up sniffing the league....their handlers have been blowing smoke up their ass for 10 years and they think it's their god given right to make bank in the league.

I don't begrudge kids having agents and families who are their to support them, and that's how it works in many/most cases...certainly the kids that places like Uconn wants to get, but you think the people in Darryn Peterson's camp weren't calling the shots this year? 100% handlers.

I read yesterday that he is projected #58? He’s bigger and stronger than Sonogo and with training he could very well be able to shoot. Clingan can now. I just don’t get it.

if he played how he's playing in the tournament all year, he would 100% be higher up. Mocks haven't adjusted to the past couple weeks.

I see Reed going in round 2 more likely than not. The NBA seems to underrate UConn players in the draft though they’re typically more pro ready in favor of young “upside” guys that often end up getting coaches and GMs fired. They want 19 year old “projectable” players. In no world should Castle have gone fourth and Spencer in round 2. And Clingan looks like a huge steal at pick 7.

The fact that most of the talking heads are saying that Dan Hurley is the best coach, college or pro, in the country is huge. Players at that level, dream of playing in the NBA, and they have to believe that Hurley gives them the best shot at it.

Mullins shot has become part of the zeitgeist. It’s actually insane how much play it has gotten.

So why aren't blue blood programs getting the future NBA superstars winning championships with Flagg, or Boozer, or Peterson? I don't think it's coincidence. Watch Sunday's game. When you have a Boozer, it's natural to give him the ball in key moments. In the last six minutes or so of Sunday's game, one Duke player -- one -- made a shot. Everyone else was a spectator. During that same period, I think all five of our starters made at least one hoop (ironically, if one didn't it was Tarris but I don't have time to look right now). We all need to stop assuming that's coincidental as opposed to just the way it is. Off the top of my head, I think during Duke's collapse against Houston there was also a lot of standing around and hoping the big gorilla pulls you through the trouble.

The rules are still changing every year, so long term trends are more difficult to figure out than we're all pretending, but my point is we shouldn't be wishing we could do what other schools do when we're winning far more championships than they are. We should be asking why other schools aren't following our model.
 
the basketunderreview guys made the same point i've said elsewhere, when you recruit a top 5 ball dominant guy that comes with certain obligations in playstyle and roster construction. duke doesn't have a top level ballhandler and instead rely on their superstar wing/front court guy to handle the ball and do the creation, especially in crunchtime. this leads to predictability and headlessness when someone else is forced to make decisions.
 
Just keep getting tough, resilient 4 stars and proven transfers. You can coach them to be All Americans. That's how we continue to balance out the ways to victory

I'm not exactly sure how this turned into a discussion on politics and a discussion on transfer speculation and NBA future, but that's exactly what happened.

Politics is never allowed, and leave a player's future into their own hands. Every player is a husky until he says otherwise.
