Think this will help recruiting?

This clip is going to live for a long time. The marketing on this one will have serious legs. That Laettner shot and B2B NC's are what seeded Duke's brand, then ESPN took it and ran with it. I hopped on Kansas' board earlier and lot's of posts angling to get us in there - won't happen, but good to see that kind of excitement for us.

There's an uncommitted 5 star still available.
With upcoming coaching movement, things may open up (Mingo, if Self retires).

with the bigs in particular they have a lot to show. post passing is a critical skill nowadays and someone like tarris making miraculous leaps from his headless days at michigan to dishing out key passes and leveraging his post skills to do so is just tremendous. this kind of post big who can pass is very much what the league is looking for now. the smart ones will recognize this.

The recruiting is fine. The most important players to bring in come from the portal these days and UConn has done quite well outside of those merely looking to cash in.

As I noted in the post-game: We bring in Ngongba, we don't bring in Reed. Who would you rather have today?

I think this chapter in UConn's story is going to grab kid's attention, it's already all over Youtube shorts and I'm sure it's on the other platforms - it's the perfect clip. Moments like these are those cherries on top that just might make the difference, and I'm not going to pretend I don't want the next #1 recruit thinking UConn first.

Stacking the roster with one and dones does not win championships. You need experience and you saw that last night. And, you need a bench of players willing to accept their role. Bring in one one and done freshman, one or two freshmen that will stay two to four years, and fill the holes through the portal.

No one cares about ESPN. Every UConn game is on tv and anyone can watch.

As long as you have the money to subscribe to a half a dozen different streaming services and channels and whatever.

Our recruiting is more than good enough. While it is true that we don't get the flash that some programs get (hell, Steph Castle, our top recruit since most likely Rudy was very low key & workman like in his approach), we get something better, character and will.

A week from today we may be preparing to take home the trophy for the third time in four years. I don't see how that could be a possibility if our recruiting wasn't among the best few programs in the country.

we don't need the top 5 kind of guys. too expensive, redundant skills etc. but rank 10-50 guys are the sweet spot for mutually beneficial deals. take a guy like dame sarr, he'd be insane on this team. skilled overseas athletes can gain a lot of value from uconn.

So you would have passed on Cooper Flagg? There is a tier of player that could help us. You have to trust Hurley to figure out if it's the right guy with the right attitude. But Hurley would have taken Flagg in a minute even if his skills were redundant.

it's not that we should pass on them but they are getting so insanely expensive nowadays it's not a worthwhile investment. dybantsa etc are over 10 million. if they want to come for a reasonable price then it's fine obviously.

coop is a rare exception i was more talking about the prototypical solo creator wing/guard prospect ranked high because of offense potential. guys like dybantsa ace bailey etc. they typically want the clear it out and let me iso playstyle with no defense.

Yeah, Duke typically gets 2-4 top 12 type kids. I just don't know if that will ever be Hurley's model. It would be nice to get one, if we are going to put them in the starting lineup.

Right now the two programs that are building off freshmen contributors are Duke & Arkansas.
Scheyer is an interesting case to me. Seems like a great coach for how new he is, but something tells me he might be as good as the current recruiting cycle seeing as how he’s had two generational freshmen who were NPOTY-caliber, and a multitude of 5 stars on the bench. Might be more than a coincidence that Duke has peaked in these past 2 years compared to the ones before.

I think next year will tell a lot about how he can hold up given that class won’t be nearly as loaded.

Think we were pretty much there already. Demary was our number 1 portal target, secured him over many top programs with massive bags. Went after Reed because he was willing to backup Samson for a year and we knew the potential. Mahaney was our top target at PG that year.

Guys like Meleek Thomas are always gonna choose the squid path, you can’t change who someone is even if they’re super talented and they’re choice 1. The great part is Dan and co will always find the right guys for us, they’ve proven that by now.

We backed of Meleek Thomas hard towards the end. Obviously the staff saw something they didn't like.

The portal is where you pick up ready-made talent these days. Landrew and County are going to be good for us, but there's no reason why we won't be reeling in a beast of a center and a top-end PF this off-season.

Give me a Malachi clone to round of the roster and we're golden.

Scheyer is the new Jim Boeheim. Who else can do less with more. I'd been meaning to find a Duke page to see if the rumblings were starting.

This run is also going to help with the next batch of incoming seniors to fill out the roster. The next Malachi Smith for sure. And I bet Dwayne Koroma and Alec Millender are feeling pretty good about their choice right now and some players are going to want to be in their shoes next year.

I mean at some point recruits have to understand that, you know, UConn is the most dominate program in this century. You can get more NIL or
you can be a basketball player. You can be a part of something very special.
No unless its another stepping stone to get into the Big 12 or ACC

there are recruits like Flagg in that they have a dream school. we were never truly in the cards for him but it was fun to watch. Never got a natty.

there are recruits like Meleek Thomas that want playing time and the cash. Can only happen here if the position is in need and we have the cash. Acuff wound up being better.

there are recruits like Mullins who want to be coached hard. Not about the cash. Not a social media kid. Might want to check today though.

so it’s dependent on the kid and the situation.

2026 seems like Diane would have wanted UConn with AK leaving but likely wanted the cash in Houston.

We should be prime for the portal though.

we could potentially eat into the overseas athletes type that AZ/Duke/Illinois etc have gotten. we have some but not as high tier. These guys don't get a lot of NIL but are there for program aura/connections and we can eat into that. Overseas guys like dame sarr are very valuable high athleticism high skill pieces.

It seems we are starting with kids like Rebie/Furphy and our bench guys, this seems like an avenue Hurley will naturally look to tap into more and more.

Illinois starts 3 of them, with more on the bench. Arizona starts two of them. I'm not sure how one would qualify Mara, I know he's from Spain.

If you look at the quality of kid on Illinois, those euros play very connected and together. They're skilled, a bit more mature and big. I would think they would play well within Hurley's system as well.

yea this is an area the program can and needs to dominate in recruiting. az/duke/illinois has had a bit of a headstart with the relationship aspect, particularly with USA basketball and international camps. but we should be competitive. the women's program is going to build another dynasty on top of this strategy. we need a similar international level recruiter for the men's side.

We’ve had huge success over the past 3 decades. This despite the fact that the burger boy schools have the lions share of top high school talent every year. Somehow that moment yesterday may change recruits and transfers opinions on making UConn their destination stop.

We are all aware of our successes but after yesterday, the world is aware. Two other observations: it’s a better use of our money to pay a top notch coach like Danny than spend it on players who can’t guarantee any Nattys.

If this performance against Duke doesn’t compel any Power 4 conference to extend us an invite, I don’t know what to say. The “we don’t have competitive football” is a bs reason for excluding us. If that’s the collective consensus of the Power 4, then please explain schools like Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina and many other sub-par football programs in their respective conferences.

We had two titles in the last four years, so I'm not sure this run adds much to that. We aren't going to try to win with more than one freshman starter. There's good reason for that, it's a model that has failed over and over and has gotten worse in the portal era, where you can load up on experienced players. Ultimately that won the day yesterday, experience in crunch time.

So I expect Dan to focus on 2-3 freshmen a year, maybe one of them as a one and done type, and fill out the roster with the portal and with developmental players. Furphy, in time, maybe has the impact Ross has now. That continuity is valuable. That is really where I think the success helps, our guys mostly stay. They don't transfer out. It's been critical.
