Last year when we first saw her play I thought of Ashley Battle for her speed and versatility. At my house we (including my wife, my daughters, my son) all loved AB, so initially I considered the comparison to be quite a compliment to Gabby.
But this year she's showing a ball hawking ability that may be putting her in a class by herself. When she, Moriah, and Collier are out there, their hands are everywhere; no opponent's pass is safe.
If she is not already, she soon will be one of the most feared defensive players in the country.

The best one was on Wednesday night when she came up behind the UCF player and just took the ball right out of her hands. Before the UCF player even knew what was happening, Gabby was already attempting a shot that she ultimately missed.

With Gabby, Napheesa and Mo being so quick and good at stealing, I'm amazed at how many steals Nykesha Sales had! Did she get that many more minutes, or how on earth did she manage to get so many?!?!?! (She was a bit before my time following the team.) And she had her career cut a bit short too by injury, didn't she? What was her steals per 40 mins, anyone know?

Nykesha had her 447 steals in 137 games, as opposed to 135 games for #2 Rizzotti (349 steals), 154 for #3 Moore (310), 127 for #4 Abrosimova (299), and 154 for #5 Faris (294).

She was just that good a thief - she played in 136 games (plus one basket in 15 seconds) and averaged 25.8 minutes per game. The only year she didn't top 100 steals was her last year when she got injured, and she finished that year with 98 - tied for 8th most in a season. Per 40 minutes she averaged 5.1 steals. Moriah is currently at 3.4 per 40 minutes for her career.

Wow! 5.1 steals, a whole 1 more than Gabby and Gabby's not getting as many minutes, and nearly 2 more than Mo! Wonder if that record will ever be broken...

The toughest thing is to get enough in that freshman year, when chances of minutes and playing defense at a really high level are not great. Sales had 102 at a rate of 5.4/40 minutes Moriah had 52 at a rate of 3.1 - that is a pretty deep hole to dig out from.
I suspect the reason for that sudden spate of really good seasons from 1994 - 1998 had a lot to do with 1) Kara and Rebecca giving confidence to gamble with them as a last line of defense; 2. a somewhat weaker BE conference before the arrival of ND and Rutgers so weaker SOS. There have been 9 player years with at least 98 steals - 7 of them between 1995 and 1998 and two since the advent of the AAC from Moriah who also had Dolson, Stokes, and Stewart behind her.
