PSU to the ACC??? Can someone please delete this thread?
ND makes about $8 million a year from it's TV contract. Purdue makes $25 million.
I don't think ND goes to the Big10, ever. they have had an open invite for many years. They are afraid of the regionalism. They don't want a conference period, but if they have to bite the bullet, the ACC fits the demographic much better. Now more than ever with the addition of Syr and Pit, traditional rivals. Here's hoping they find a reason to decline, leaving the door open for CT.I am still worried about this. Stories are coming out that ND prefers ACC over B10 for a conference. Although PSU may be more of a long shot, Joe Pa wanted an Eastern sports conference and here it is as most of the old Eastern Independants are in the ACC: Pitt, BC, Syracuse, Miami, FSU, and Maryland is there as well. It's now or never for PSU.
It is not a coincidence that the ACC left 2 spots open. One is for ND if they want it. PSU is welcome to take the other.
I think ACC's order of preference for 15 and 16 (Texas and Texas Tech were never a real option):
1) ND and PSU
2) ND and UConn
3) UConn and Rutgers
The Big 10 can preempt the ACC by offering ND as well as Rutgers and UConn (as well as one other team) for an Eastern presence which would satisfy PSU to stay.
Number of reasons.
1) Academically, ACC (Duke, UNC, UVA, BC, GT) is equal if not better than B10
NO, IT'S NOT
5) Demographically, Southeast and Mid Atlantic are growing. Midwest is shrinking.
A demographic change like that would take a century for it to make any difference. We're talking about massive schools in the Big Ten. In the ACC, you have four schools within 60 miles of one another in Carolina. Sure, the region is growing, but there are four schools there, and two of them are tiny. How long is it going to take those schools to catch up to PSU, Michigan, Ohio St, Wisconsin and all the fans that watch those teams?
6) if both ND and PSU joined, dollars between ACC and B10 would be close
No, they would not come anywhere near the Big10. Again, Michigan, Ohio St, Wisconsin--lotsa eyeballs.
7) Is PSU really a Midwestern or an Eastern team?
I believe it is closer to $12, and the hoops schools are going to get a big payday when they go back to market, taking their $2.5/team to $6-8 or more. All ND would have to do is call NBC and tell them they are thinking about joining the Big 10, and I bet NBC bumps the deal to $15 or more.
ND does not need to do anything.
While I agree on all points, I wish I could be so confident. I am confident we end up in the ACC eventually but I keep going back and forth between confidence and that uneasy feeling in my stomach.Stop the madness! The holy grail for the ACC is TX and ND. Penn State ain't coming. Thankfully, for us, neither is TX or ND.
Pitt and SU were already knocking on the ACC's door. UConn wasn't. Pitt and SU bring basketball and hopefully ND and PSU bring football.

Or the BCE - Big Catholic East - or the NDNFF - Notre Dame No Football FederationUpstater, ACC is as good if hotter an academic conference as the ACC. Using the recent US news ratings, here are the stats:
Big 10. ACC
1) Northwestern 12. 1) Duke 10
2) Michigan 28. 2) UVA 25
3) Wisconsin 42. 3) WFU 25
4) Penn St. 45. 4) UNC 29
5) Illinois 45. 5) BC 31
6) Ohio State 55. 6) GT 36
7) Purdue 62. 7) Miami 38
8) Minnesota 68. 8) Maryland 55
9) Mich St. 71. 9) Pitt 58
10) Iowa 71. 10) Syracuse 62
11) Indiana 75. 11) Clemson 68
12) Nebraska 101. 12) VT 71
13) FL St. 101
14) NC St. 101
By the numbers, ACC is better, but I think the two are comparable.
What about the candidates?
ND 19
Texas 45 (clearly too high)
UConn 58
Rutgers 68
Missouri 90
Iowa St 97
TCU 97
Kansas 101
Kansas State 143
Cincinnati 143
Texas Tech 160
Louisville 164
PSU is not leaving the B10 for the ACC. I could see ND/UConn as a package to the ACC.
Upstater, I agree with you that the ratings are a joke! My point is that the top of the ACC, Duke, UVA, UNC, BC are as good if not better academic institutions than the Big 10. Thus, PSU could justify a move to the ACC would not hurt academics.
