No news to everyone here... but was looking at my ESPN FFL comments for Alex Smith, 49ers QB.

There is increasing speculation that the added use of Colin Kaepernick and the Wildcat formation is hindering Smith's performance, the Sacramento Bee reports.
Spin:
San Francisco beat writer Cam Inman intimates that the "WildKap" scheme has interrupted the team's rhythm instead of enhancing it and notes that, "coincidence or not, in each of the past two games, Alex Smith had a pass intercepted on the ensuing play after a Kaepernick snap." When asked if he was hindered by the unorthodox and sporadic rotation of quarterbacks, Smith said, "I'll say this: It's fun to come in when it's first down. It's not fun to come back in when it's third-and-long." He quickly backtracked and noted the formation's effectiveness early on, but his uneasiness with the decisions of Greg Roman to utilize Kaepernick more is evident. Between the sprained finger and now this, Smith's season seems to be unraveling a bit, which is a shame after such a strong start.

Wow, a beat writer just made a judgement and reported that something the coaches are doing is not actually working.

Desmond Conner told us that's not his job.

The problem with the wild cat is that it's like any other gimmick. It works for a while, but then everyone figures out how to defend it and it's worthless. All the wildcat is, is trying to run an option offense without the proper personnel. When the option is well executed it's very tough to stop, but when it's run on 1 out of every 15 plays after spending an hour a week practicing it, it's a mess.

You forgot something. In an option offense (the Wildcat) the advantage for the offense is to make the defense cover multiple potential ball carriers. In UConn's version, it McCummings right, McCummings left, or McCumming up the middle. So in game planning for the Huskies, it's every player to #11.

It seems that most teams that run it use a similar scheme. The QB runs with ball 99% of the time. If you use it for more than one play every two drives and actually distribute the ball, then you got something. Though it could be the ultimate 'rope-a-dope' where they actually open it up to fool Cincy in the last game of the season.

The wildcat works when you have Percy Harvin or a weapon that you want to get more touches.

McCummings is not a weapon. He is not a threat to go 50-yard in the wildcat. He is more of a short yardage back.

Darius Butlter would have been a good wildcat QB. Can't really think of anyone on the current Huskies

Don't know if wildcat can work in right situation with right talent; do know that it doesn't work at Uconn.

Other than the direct snap, how does the scenario you describe, and the result, differ from the running game at-large?

Differ? Come on . . . that would be McCombs run right, McCombs run left, McCombs up the middle? Everybody knows that.
