NHL Network now showing a 2 hour show telling the history of the Whale.

Probly can tell your remote to dial it up.

I have two Whalers ball caps. Even in the panhandle of Florida I get comments on them almost every time.

When I moved to San Jose, I worked with two guys who were huge hockey fans (they played roller hockey) and both were Whalers fans, one had a Kevin Dineen jersey. That logo is iconic and I think attracted fans in places with no team (the Sharks didn't exist yet when these guys were young).

A couple of times while we were out on a Saturday night, I'll have a Whalers cap on and a guy would walk up and say something like, "Jordy Douglas is my neighbor!"

Always fascinating how we romanticize the past. Half empty Civic Center with only games sold out was when Whalers played the Bruins or Rangers.

The 4-5 seasons before the final season, Hartford was bottom three in the NHL in attendance. They deserved to leave and we don’t deserve another crack at it.

You forgot to mention that the 4-5 season before the Whalers final season they were absolute garbage. The problem with the Whalers wasn’t the fans, it was ownership and management. They were just incompetent. Provide a product worth watching and the fans will show up, provide a garbage product and they won’t. Just like every other team in the league.

Simply not true.
You should read Deepster response above about Whalers being in bottom three in NHL attendance last 5 years unless you believe his statement is false as well. Next you will tell me Hartford is thriving and lively city and Hartford Civic Center is a top notch facility.

When they were good they outdrew the Bruins, It's funny, now everyone is telling Red Sox fans that nothing is going to change unless they stop going to games. The Whale didn't make the playoffs for 5 straight years at a time when 16 teams out of 21 made it. The fans stopped going and it's "You didn't deserve to have a team." Fans actually showed for the last season but even then the rat-tailed bastard would revise the count down.

Only outdrew the Bruins in 1 season out of 18 seasons. That was 1986 season and it was only by about 100 more in attendance per game.

The romanticism of the Whalers clouds people’s memories. The attendance was embarrassing and Hartford was (and still is) a terrible sports town.

But like someone said, the logo is cool and it seems cute to harp on the “Bring the Whalers back!!!” stuff
