The View From Section 241 — Duke

This gesture was different, he swipes left to right across his face. Not saying it deserved a penalty, but thats what I believe caused the penalty.

The gesture has been banned in the NFL. It's a gang sign that means out for blood.

O.K., am finishing lunch and decided I wanted to take a look. So recognizing that Dan O’s senior year we were in the Big East, and had a harder schedule, and that this year has 3 games to go, the numbers are as follows:

Dan O: 63%, 7.3 yards per pass, 23/15 TD/Int ratio.
Joe F: 69%, 8.3 ypp, 25/0 ratio. And a running threat where Dan O had negative yardage for the year.

So, this time meaning it, at a later time we can debate how you adjust numbers for strength of schedule, much less how the game has changed over a generation, but just from the numbers JF’s senior year is at the moment significantly more productive than Dan’s was.
Dan O’s best season was his junior year, so I’d compare Best Season to Best Season

It was like a hush, not a slashing motion. Even the announcers said it wasn't a penalty.

The ACC officials missed a couple of holds and at least one pass interference

There were 3 flags that seemed, in the moment, egregiously bad. Skyler's TD celebration - the ref mistook the finger smell for throat slash maybe; Latu jumping over a Duke receiver near sideline in effort to avoid contact; Neider OPI where the defender simply fell on the backpedal.

The Neider one was particularly infuriating

The sins of omission were worse than the bad calls.

Frankly, there were times yesterday that I was praying for a win less to have the win and more so all these strangers would want to come back, notwithstanding lack of conference and major bowl access and name opponents and all.

As good as Mensah is, he was clearly the second best QB on the field yesterday.
I had the same feeling. I was praying for a win but even if we lost, hoping that the atmosphere would entice better attendance going forward.

Yes Mensah was the second best on the field Saturday. And he's getting paid $8M over two years.
“Duke quarterback Darian Mensah reportedly received an NIL compensation package valued at up to $8 million. The $4 million per year for two years, matches the highest annual average in college football history, makes Mensah one of the highest-paid college football players under the NIL system, and is cited as a record-breaking deal for both Duke and college football.
There are various performance incentives based on achieving specified on-field milestones such as starting a certain number of games, team win totals, postseason appearances, and individual statistics. Additional bonuses are triggered by participation in team promotional events and donor functions, completion of community service projects, especially those with Duke partners, academic eligibility and remaining in good standing for the duration of the contract.
Mensah’s deal reportedly also includes major lifestyle upgrades, such as a new residence, vehicle, and charitable initiatives, reflecting the transformative impact of NIL opportunities on athletes’ lives. This NIL package far surpasses previous deals at Duke and in the ACC, signaling both Duke’s investment in football and the rapid escalation of NIL agreements nationally."
So what's Joe worth?

LOL. If Joe was able to play next year in his 8th year of college, he would be offered at least 2 large from a P-2 school. No question.

I don’t understand this debate. We know that the NCAA said no slashing motions or 15 yards. Just like when Rosa got flagged in ‘22 against NC State for the flip after doing the TD, they had been told you can’t do something. If the NCAA says you will be flagged for doing something and we do it anyway, ….
