The View From Section 241 — Delaware

I started worrying about the DL when against Central when they didn't register a single sack against an FCS offensive line that had three freshman starters. Nothing since then has changed my mind. Huge dropoff from Stafford, Yates and Gourdine and it shows. Forecast: plenty of agita ahead.

And yet they dominated SU's OLine for over 3 quarters.

We needed 2 yards and were afraid to run. So if you are passing and your plan is to throw short of the line to gain we have a slow TE in the flat? How about Skyler Bell in on the edge and then the TE running a 5 yard button hook upfield? That play was so poorly designed and run. The coaching staff had better be sick about what happened in Delaware. Chadwick screwed up royally and there were other failures but ultimately, we got out schemed. That's not on the players.

I think part of this is the portal. You being in a bunch of guys you really don’t know and try to put together a defense. Sometimes it works well. Other times you guess wrong and others you need to work into it.

1 other thing. Delaware was pumped for this. First FBS home game. I worried we would come out flat after the Syracuse game. I thought the defense did.

-> The UConn defense is trying to re-build chemistry this season and get guys acclimated to the 3-3-5 scheme of defensive coordinator Matt Brock.

The Huskies returned only two starters from last year’s defense in defensive backs D’Mon Brinson and Cam Chadwick.

Although two other defensive backs, Malachi McLean and Lee Molette, also played in all 13 games last season and were integral parts of the unit as was linebacker Donovan Branch, there are a lot of players trying to get accustomed to each other and the system.

Six of the starters in the Delaware loss – defensive backs Tyrece Mills and Devin Pringle, defensive linemen Vincent Carroll-Jackson, Antoineo Harris Jr. and Stephon Wright, as well as linebacker Bryun Parham – are all transfers playing in Storrs for the first season. <-

Throw in DL Smiley being out in concussion protocol and DL Trent Jones still out…

This is exactly what I had in mind. But I also wonder if there was a degree of not taking UD seriously. It didn’t matter so much on the offensive side. We were generally better. But the defense was totally lost. Almost like they didn’t expect UD to be any challenge after shutting down Central and playing Syracuse even. Kind of reminded me of Georgia State a few years ago. Except Georgia State that year was better. We lost a tough game to NCState then went down to Atlanta and got pushed around every which way. That team never really recovered. This week will tell a lot about this year’s crew.

Did they really “shut down Central? I remember the D looking soft at times and Mora calling out the defense after the game. The stats don’t look bad…but it didn’t feel like a shut down.

Jeez… they only gave up 2 FGs after the gifted field position TD secondary to the botched long snap??

I did not want to see that again

Saturday was a kick in the gonads.

One last note, as a Giants fan as well, I’ve watched three OT losses in 8 days. Enough already. Whatever I’m being punished for, please stop it before I stop watching football.
Maybe this weekend you should wear a cup, just in case.

On the running game they seemed to run the same play, off tackle to the right side an awful lot in short yardage. Even when they lined up in the power I at one point they ran the same way, just with another blocker.

I have to believe that Rosa fumbled the ball in practice too. He is very good in short yardage but the left Edward’s in there all the time.
