Again, I did not get to watch. Was in a convention in Canada (the real one north of the lake — not the yucky one that may actually be in New York that we played in two weeks ago) and beyond being stuck in a conference room my CBSSports app was blocked at the border and wouldn’t show me the game. So again, this week we’ll only be discussing where we are and are not, as opposed to me pretending I’m going to analyze the game to a group of you who actually saw it.

So first, yes, after the heartbreaking losses of the last two weeks, I was ready for this team to blow (out) Ball U (pun intended) but it wasn’t to be. We got to 2-2 but I fully expected to be 3-1 going back into the upstate NY tundra, and I at least hoped that yesterday would remind me how close we were to being 4-0 rather than how far we had to go to be as good as last year. It didn’t. But the fact is we’re 2-2 and in each loss we had multiple chances to make just one more play that would have us at 3-1 or 4-0. And (with its QB which is now not going to happen) Syracuse might have been as good as they were last year, and Delaware is almost certainly much better than anyone thought it would be. So I’m not happy but I don’t see the world as ending either. Saturday is obviously a huge moment — we have to not just be competitive on the road but able to win, but even without a huge improvement there is no reason we can’t win out our remaining 6 G-5 games. I’m not saying that we’re playing well enough to expect to do so, but taken game by game they are all winnable. So let’s get to 4-2 before the trip to Boston and see if we can’t be improved.

As to the units, yeah the defensive performance was not good enough. Getting Mills back on the field can only help, and getting the missing DL on the field for the first time will hopefully help (as getting Yates back halfway through last season did), but they have to be better. One can only hope that it’s issues really learning the D with so many new faces and not merely lack of talent, because the first can lead to improvement and the second not so much. On offense, the bashing of the offense generally and JF in particular is really childish. (Yes, I know it’s the internet and folks love to complain irrationally but still.). We’re now far enough into the season where stats start becoming meaningful. I get that JF is not Peyton Manning, but come on. He’s completing 2/3 of his passes, still hasn’t had a pass picked off and has been sacked 3 times in 4 games. The expectations that he could be doing much better than that are just silly. The offense, in fact, still hasn’t had a single TO in 4 games. That is not just good luck, it’s accomplishing something. Not something the Boneyard seems to care about, but something nonetheless. By the way — Victor Rosa on limited touches is averaging too many yards a carry to not get a real chance to get carries behind Cam. I assume too many fumbles in practice but we’re going to have to see what happens in games.

We kicked the bejesus out of Buffalo at home last year. I don’t accept that we’re going up there next week and not winning. So let’s get it done and go from there. While I agree that the D is not playing well enough to think we’re going to be 8-4, matching last year’s 8-4 is still absolutely possible. But we’ve got to start by getting to 3-2.

Good write up.

Get a VPN. I watched the game from Netherlands on CBS Sports app to start and then through Hulu+ subscription. Express VPN works great.

I would like to see more of Terrance Smith. He is actually faster than Mel Brown. He is two inches taller and ten pounds lighter, so it's in the same ball park. The roster has him listed as WR but he looked like a RB on that 80-yarder against CCSU. He does get a couple of touches a game but 6-8 touches would make opponents have to account for him.

I have been yelling from the mountaintops that delaware is the next JMU. they're gonna be in the American or Sun Belt pretty soon, and will be an ACC backfill partner with us, when the time comes. 2 flagship atlantic coast Universities, in the atlantic coast conference... who'd've thought.

I get that JF is not Tom Brady and his stat sheet is indeed overall respectable. But there isn't really a stat for "clutch player". That's where I'm mad. At some point you have to grow out of putting easy balls in the dirt, especially when those misses could have been the key to us being 3-1 with a P4 win. 7 years is enough.

EDIT - for the record i like JF and 100% agree he's the best option we have.

You paying the piper this morning or pushing it off until Tuesday?

We allowed like 1200 yards of offense to Cuse (4th Q) and Delaware. Defense lost those games.

I have Fubo as my streaming service. Fubo has a cloud based dvr feature. I went to CBS Sports Network, scanned to the gametime timeslot. & preset it to record the game. Then I rewatched the game late Saturday night.

Being at the game, I came away happy with a win, but frustrated with the outcome. Our defense, while better, mystifies me as I legit see differences in how they played verses the fruit and all of the other games. Yes, they gave up that game in the final minutes, but they were stunningly good for 56 minutes of it. What happened over that time frame is a mystery to me.

Score wise, our offense should have put up 50+ on Saturday. Joe was inaccurate on a lot of throws (heck, the very first play of the game he underthrew Bell that would have been a touchdown) and we had a few penalties that prob didn't need to have occurred that would have extended drives that probably would have been scoring drives.

The good news? Our offense has the ability to actually put up points, and our skill players are skilled. The bad news? Unless 56 minute of cuse game defense shows up, we will have to put up big numbers. If you're a bettor, this is a clear case of don't touch the spread but take the over like every game.

Watching the team come off the field it did not look like there was a joy in getting the win. They seemed rather subdued. I am not sure who the team leaders are at this point though HCJM has spoken very highly of Cam Edwards. Donovan Branch looks vocal on D. Maybe some of that is due to the infux of portal players. Getting a solid win this coming Saturday would boost the team's confidence in themselves and really set up for the possibility of a decent season.

A lot of Fagnano's success in not getting intercepted is due to UConn's receivers. He regularly throws into tight single, double, triple coverage and they just go get it. Amazing to see. A case can be made that these are the best receiving corps that UConn has had.

I have my doubts about this next game. You look at the stats comparisons and think, well there is just no doubt that UConn will win. But if I were a bettor, I would lay the points.

Strange. Seemed like you liked the outcome.

In his four seasons at Maine he had 45 TDs and 12 INTs.

It's OK to admit he manages the game well and to give credit where credit's due.

intersting info, thx for sharing. Good to hear they are looking beyond a lackluster win, even as they got it.
Maybe there's some hope for this year!

Here he throws into coverage all the time and his receivers are the reason he hasn't been intercepted.

He completed 60% of his passes and had at least 2 drops that hit guys in the numbers. Zero interceptions. 1 td pass. He tends to put the football where his receiver is the only guy who can get it when he does throw into coverage. For the season he has 6 touchdowns an 0 interceptions and completed 67% of his passes. Twice this year he completed 70+%. Interesting definition of inaccurate you have. One might be tempted to suggest your view is inaccurate.
