During the tournament I kept thinking of a line from a mediocre move I saw nearly 40 years ago (thought it was going to be a Monty Python film, had a few members of the Python crew but the movie wasn't much), Yellowbeard is more dangerous when he's dead (or something to that effect) was the line.

I kind of like it when people leave us for dead. They did it in 2010 and again in 2013. They also likely assumed we were pretty much dead the past few years.

When they think we're dead we show them how wrong they are.

Yeah, SOME fans remember what it was like when UConn was the BET "loser" perennially in the 8/9 game

At the time it was a valid thought. It was a disappointing end of the cycle. They were a #1 or #2 seed for three years in a row, losing the 2nd weekend each time. All the top players were leaving at season's end.

That loss hurt quite a bit but in all candor I was far more concerned about the future of the program after the 1992-1993 season than I was after the 1995-1996 season.

I deleted this post when I realized that I was thinking of NM State when Mississippi State was written. But to answer the question, I never thought UConn BB was dead. This board is like my wife, never give me time to fix my mistakes and never let me forget the ones I make which are many.

My worst memory was being at a 1 vs 8 game and going on a bit of a run to cut the lead at the 8:00 timeout. John Condon announces there will be a reception for UConn fans after the game. He then says "The reception for Syracuse fans will be after tomorrow's game..."

please dont remind me what MSG was like during those dreaded 8/9 games

I remember being devastated when the Yankee conference lost its autobid and we were left out . We had been champs 15 times in 25 years.
We didn’t have much success but we were usually competitive.
Then the ECAC thing came up
it really wasn’t a conference but they held year end tournaments by 4 regions for Eastern Indy schools with the winners getting an auto bid
We won the New England region in 1976 ( Tony Hanson ) winning our first round NCAA game
Beating PC who had a national rep was a huge deal .
We also won in 1979 Corny Thompson losing to ( undefeated ?) Rutgers FF team
The Big East , A10 , and American East came out of that crazy setup
As far of the 8-9 game we only played in it 3 times
1986 Perno’s last year with Earl Kelly suspended .
1987 Calhoun’s first year with Gamble and Cliff suspended for academics
1988 That team finished last but won the NIT and finished 20-10 . It was a heck of team but a step below the emerging power houses in the conference.
The league was brutal during that stretch 4 in the Final 8 3 in FF
1989 we finished 7th which was a little disappointing but I was at the SH ( NCAA finalists ) game when we lost on a buzzer beating 3 by Andrew Gaze an Australian 3 pt specialist
We were so close to becoming winners again you could taste it . .

I never once thought the program was dead. There was always some reason to be optimistic, some talented class or kid coming in. Something to believe in

Hence I have great seats today.

I endured all the suck, and it helps me to appreciate all our success even more. Winning is hard
