I'm surprised. When I was at UConn a group of us played in the Willimantic fast pitch hardball league. There was also a team of UConn football players and they were pretty good.

Usually takes a couple years for teams of 22-23 yo former baseball standouts to hit their stride in slow pitch. They will field literally everything but adjusting the swing takes time. As you say, a lot of warning track fly balls
