Long suffering UConn WCBB fans were again treated on Saturday to another epic collapse of the Husky perimeter defense that has dogged the team for so many years and led to the disappointing seasons that always fall far short of any reasonable fan's expectations. The 13-29 arc shooting by DePaul followed by ND's 13-20 bombs combined to put together an ugly 53.2% stat over the last two games that can only lead to more heartache in April.

Husky fans can well remember the last very recent two game stretch of opponents picking on UConn from the outside last November when first Stanford went 7-14 in that cataclysmic loss seared so deeply into BY posters' brains and a following 13-30 by Creighton that combined for a two-game 45.5% meltdown. Three more times that season UConn was crushed on the arc, by South Carolina at 5-9, USF at 6-12, and Dayton at 10-19, the last game in an NCAA Tourney that again saw UConn fail to equal the 30-point winning margin in the NC game that the fans so deserved.

The last two-game stretch with opponents shooting a combined 50+% is a little further back but no less ominous, as back in Stewie&Mo's freshman year of 2012-13 another early-season massive breakdown allowed Purdue to go 13-22 and then Colgate to shoot 7-17 from the arc for a combined 51.3%. Colgate is UConn's next opponent this year, so things look dismal there, and that 2012-13 team went on to lose 4 games before they managed to finally do something a little bit right in April.

Last year after 6 games, UConn's opponents were shooting 37.5% from the arc, and this year it's at 34.8%, so at best UConn fans should only expect the Huskies to a little bit better than last year's team. However, even that slightly good news has to be tempered by that fact that after shooting 40% from the arc in four games against UConn in 2012-13, and 35% in two games 2013-14, and 28% in two games in 2014-15, ND is bombing at a 65% this year, so there is really little to hope for with the Huskies this season. I know that posters will be calling out every single Husky player for her disappointing play.

Now some fans may argue that Geno uses the early part of the season to get the players in shape, develop the defensive coordination and see what the best combos for defense are before hitting the post season, and that the final 3pt defensive figures for the last three years of 28.6%, 26.3%, and then 26.8% have been pretty decent, and that their own lesser standards allow them to be happy enough with the final outcomes for the Huskies. I just wish I could look upon things that way, I really do.

Though there has been much disappointment with the play so far, I will try to remain optimistic and look to see if the team is able to improve at all throughout the season. Coming from such a low starting point improvement should be easy, but i suspect it will be gradual if it occurs at all. I wish I had more confidence in the coach staff to properly teach and motivate our athletes, but since they failed to win national championships roughly half the time in the last 20 years, they may be in over their heads.

OMG what a horrible loss! A total collapse and embarrassment at Gampel! What shall we do? Geno needs to get some good players in here ASAP!
