The State of College Hockey

Good video on Cav’s thoughts on the state of college hockey

Great disparity in NIL between Big Ten and the rest of college hockey

Does not think the 26 scholarship limit is a good idea. Still unsure what the rules will be

Cav believes that allowing CHL players is a good idea if done the correct way

UConn is looking at CHL players that can help them

Still recruit USHL but says the CHL is better than the BCHL

Believes more schools will drop out of D1 because they cannot compete

Programs dropping out i think is more of the oncoming student crunch and prevailing financial issues. I don't think it's merely "can't compete"

I don’t think any B1G school will be adding hockey now that they will be paying the football and basketball players a total of 22 million per year. The quality of college hockey will improve with less teams plus adding the CHL players.

title ix continues to be the general obstacle. Teams closer to the bottom aren't going to pay any appreciable NIL in hockey

Very interesting. I didn't think of the incoming CHL players potentially leaving do to factors such as those mentioned. I do know Coach Cav has said he would like to be able to roster more than the 26 that is expected to be the limit simply do to the injury factor.

We are now "post House" Did everyone in HE opt in? UVM the following year, but everyone else? Anyone hear about QU and Colgate in the ECAC?

Opt-in deadline was moved to June 30th 2025.

From Dom Amore’s Sunday Read column:

-> Infusion of talent

Last November, the NCAA opened the door for Canadian junior hockey leaguers to play for its member schools. That had never been allowed because players in those leagues received stipends and were not considered amateurs, but with NIL and revenue sharing that has now been recognized as a moot point. So some of the top prospects in North America are headed from the Western, Quebec and Ontario hockey leagues to places like UConn, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and Yale.

“The proper development path for a player who aspires to play in the NHL is Midget or Junior Hockey, then college and then pro,” UConn coach Mike Cavanaugh said, before teeing off at the Travelers Pro-Am on Wednesday. “Naturally, there is always going to be a player who can skip a step, but those players are few and far between. In Junior Hockey, you’re living with a family, you’re being taken care of. In college, there is structure, but you’re on your own. It’s a little bit more symbolic of life.”

The change in policy, for these reasons, was long overdue.

“We have to stop fighting, we have to work together,” Cavanaugh said. “It doesn’t matter to me whether you’re playing in Canada, Sweden, America, we’re all trying to get the same goals. I think it’s healthy when a kid gets to the pros to have had to get up and go to school.”

Carlin Dezainde, Brendan Dunphy and Alexandre Blais (drafted by the Ducks in the fourth round in 2024) are the first players with CHL ties to commit to UConn, which reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 2025. Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart each have four commits, according to SportsNet.ca’s tracker. <-

I am shocked at BU, but after more thought I guess not. I am actually shocked that Merrimack decided to opt in. Somehow this has the feel that opting in means you are playing at the 1A level, and not in the settlement means you are playing 1AA. We shall see what this means for hockey.

BU opted out to fall in line with the Patriot League stance of not doing rev share (where their basketball teams play) and because they don't want to be forced into the roster sizes. They also don't have football to be concerned about... Don't worry about BU, their 2025-2026 roster has the most NHL draft picks in the NCAA at 19; 7 defensemen, 11 forwards, and a world class goalie. Their NIL is very strong and because of that, they'll be more than ok financially.

The roster size limit was an issue for many non-Ivies in the ECAC too I am told by reliable sources. Well, in a decade we will know which is better.

Yup - the Patriot and the Ivies are going down the same road on rev share/roster sizes. Ivies definitely taking a hard line stance on it as they have done so forever on athletic scholarships.

Mercyhurst abruptly cut their hockey program today.

Days after asking for donations and the coach thanking people for donating on their day of giving.

Apparently the players had no idea it was happening.
