Bummer. Definitely from a generation past. Party all night, watch the sun rise, pop a few pills and throw the ball around a few hours later.

The 74 playoff game and last minute TD against Miami still haunts me, as a Fins fan. Great QB. RIP

RIP, he was a gamer and sure lived life in the fast lane. I remember a quote from Stabler, "How much sleep do you really need for a game thats 3 hours long".

Loved Daryl Lamonica. Didn't understand why they benched him in favor of Stabler until I saw his presence on the field & instant decision making. He had a gun for an arm.

As a Pats fan, all I can remember about him was the 1976 playoff game at Oakland when the Pats outplayed the Raiders, but the Raiders won on a phony roughing the passer call.

The Raiders went on to win the Super Bowl, crushing the Vikings.

I was shocked to find out he wasn't in the HoF.

His generation was Joe Willie, Griese, Bradshaw, Staubach and Tarkenton. For the decade Stabler played in Oakland he held his own against that group and they're all HoF'ers.

He's one of the players who revolutionized the pay scale of the NFL through the creation of the WFL.

I don't think he belongs in the Hall of Fame. Good, not great QB on some very good teams.

Different era. I remember reading a Steve Largent story in SI or someplace where he talked about getting drafted by the Houston Oilers in the late 1970's and his first training camp. Bum Philips would throw parties at his house after practice during camp. Largent was not that kind of guy, and said he was not surprised when he was about to be cut at the end of training camp. He didn't understand how anyone could function in practice after all the partying. The Oilers ultimately dumped him on the Seahawks for an 8th round pick, and the rest is history.

Everybody functions differently some guys need to sleep the night before a game and some need to be up all night. At that time Kenny Stabler was not the same Qb, that is when the oilers made the stupid strategy of getting ex Oakland raiders in order to overtake the steelers, as a result the oilers got worse because those ex raiders were washed up.
