I love how Geno teaches them to go "under" the screen instead of following the player over it and getting burning chasing them down from behind.

If the offensive player wants to shoot a deep, go ahead, the percentage is much lower than a drive to the basket lay-up.

I think KF was really good at knowing when to do that.

Kelly and Moriah are both particularly good at jumping the screen and going over it with their charge. Neither follows both get above the screen both it is fully in place. Moriah is extremely quick and doesn't need much room either.

We, deservedly, give Kelly Faris a lot of credit for her defensive prowess. Although not her fault, but how many truly gifted offensive players did she have to stop in her four seasons at Storrs? And how many of those truly gifted scorers played on very good teams that forced her and her teammates to play honest defense?

I think what Uconn does better than most anyone else is the overplay to the side of the intended screen with the screener's man preventing the drive toward the basket. By doing that, the ball handler has two options - going above the hedging player thus negating the screen or moving the screen further away from the basket, or trying to split the gap between the hedging defender and the screener's man - possible for really fast and good ball handlers, but also as likely to create a turn over.

There aren't that many good teams in WCBB. I would say that KF stopped some pretty good scorers, including Chiney (before Stef was able to guard her), A'Dia Matthias, Maggie Lucas, Chelsea Gray, Skylar Diggins, Shoni, Alyssa Thomas...etc. It was such a luxury to have a player who could guard the other team's best player, 1-4. Unless it was Griner, Kelly Faris was on it.

Which is exactly the key to pick and roll defense; Communication on the screens and coordination between teammates. A defender going over the top has to have her teammate hedge/bump the cutter then recover. A defender going under has to have her teammate give her space to slide between her man and herself. It also helps to have good feet. Jerry West, back in the day, was very good at stepping through screens.
